Although the internet can be a great way to access things from television and movies, it also has a way of driving its own trends.
When YouTube started off, it was intended as a way for people to add their own home movies and videos online and to share them with the world.
While that was a great thing in and of itself, it soon grew into something entirely different. People started posting videos from shows and other places, but they also started making their own content. From that trend, vlogging began along with plenty of other online trends.
But one of the most interesting has to be the emergence of the “flash mob.”
For those who don’t know, a flash mob is a kind of public performance that seems to happen completely spontaneously.
Though these performances can include all kinds of different things, one thing they have in common is they’re often designed explicitly to go viral online!
Although they also give people plenty of joy in the moment, more often than not they’re trying to spread the message about something or call attention to something. In some cases, flash mobs are an exciting and unexpected way to share news about a wedding or a proposal.
In others, it’s just a great way to call attention to the performers themselves—like in today’s video.
The clip we’re talking about today was posted online in May 2013.
The video was filmed in Germany and was captured by a marching band called TSV Lauf. As the clip begins, a bunch of people are walking around in a public square in front of a church with a clocktower.
After the clock strikes a certain time, one solitary drummer walks out into the open with a single bass drum and starts playing. Although nobody notices at first, a moment later a couple more drummers emerge as well.
After that, a small crowd starts to gather around them.
Before long, there are three or four drummers playing a complex rhythm together—but it’s still unclear what it is.
More and more drummers come out and by now, there’s a huge crowd gathered to watch. After that, even more musicians come out—among them saxophones, a tuba, trumpets and a conductor.
Finally, all the drums stop and the horn section starts playing a recognizable melody. For those who don’t know it, the song is “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO, which was a huge radio hit.
Finally, people in the crowd start to recognize it and they pull their cameras out.
Since the clip went online, it has been viewed some 29 million times and it’s easy to see why!
Although there are plenty of flash mob videos on the internet, not all of them are equally successful or equally fun to watch. In this case, there was no real occasion for it and truly nobody was expecting it.
When the performance ends, the whole crowd gives them a huge round of applause. For those who liked this performance, be sure to check out TSV Lauf’s other videos on YouTube as well—they have plenty of fun public performances in the same vein as this one.
Congratulations to TSV Lauf on their awesome performance! Be sure to watch the full thing in the clip below:
