Serenading—it’s something we all find ourselves doing from time to time.

Often when we’re alone, we’re not afraid to let loose and sing. Whether it’s in the car or in the shower, we let the notes fly with wild abandon.

Yet, other times, we’re in it for others. Crooning to our friends and loved ones is a surefire way to let them know we care.

We spend all of our time with them, why not sing them a little tune?

Whether it’s on-key or off, they’re sure to embrace the energy. And who knows, sometimes they might just be surprised with the talent hiding within.

That’s exactly what fitness trainer Derrick Ball did when he sang for his fiancee Ashley Broderick.

He waited until they were both traveling in the car together one day to serenade her and give her the surprise of a lifetime.

Cleverly, he filmed the entire exchange, making sure to capture her stunned reaction.

What was just another unassuming car ride turns into a jaw-dropping American Idol audition!

The video shows the couple riding along down the road, and then all of a sudden Ball drops a beat with his fist on the middle car console and a snap of his fingers.

No sooner does he start to belt out “10,000 Hours” by Dan + Shay and Justin Bieber.

And his girlfriend’s jaw hits the floor!

You can see the awe, wonder and amazement in her face as he completely nails this song cover. In fact, it’s flawless!

How could he have kept such overwhelming talent hidden from her this entire time?

Since this video was uploaded to TikTok it’s received four million likes and has sparked a conversation of more than 22,000 comments.

But in true TikTok fashion, not everything is what it seems. Upon closer scrutiny, there seems to be another surprise.

It turns out, Derrick Ball’s shockingly perfect serenade was merely a ploy. Yes, that’s right—he was lip-syncing the entire time!

Apparently, he crafted the video using someone else’s sound-clip. And while the vocal performance may not be his forté, his lip-syncing is definitely spot-on. In the comments section, Ball admits:

“Yes, it’s not my sound. It’s a joke people.”

After a little research, the vocal track belongs to a man named Jonathan Tilkin.

Tilkin is well-known across the internet for covering pop-songs with a honey-sweet voice.

According to his website:

“In early 2017, Tilkin burst onto the Instagram scene with his unique and inventive multi-cam covers of major pop songs. He quickly gained 100K followers and since has added to his extremely loyal and dedicated fanbase.”

His vocal covers have become a hit success, and he’s even gone on to launch some personal recordings of his own. If you like what you hear, you can find him on multiple platforms, including YouTube and Instagram.

After learning the truth, we can’t decide what’s most impressive—Derrick Ball’s immaculate lip-syncing or Jonathan Tilkin’s nearly perfect cover of Justin Bieber.
