In 1995, Mariah Carey and Boyz 2 Men’s song “One Sweet Day” captured the hearts of the listeners all around the world.
The song topped the Hot Billboard 100 for 16 weeks and was ranked first in Rolling Stone’s poll for Best Collaboration of All Time. Though others have tried and tried since to cover it, few have managed to truly do it justice.
Fortunately, one group of Filipino singers managed to with one awesome viral performance.
Although the performance is a bit restrained, their voices are all full of emotion.
As the video begins, the singers form a small circle around the microphone in the middle. Michael Pangilinan and the female singer Katrina Velarde then start to sing the first verse.
Pangilinan’s deep voice is perfect for the intro!
Though he is not a pure bassist, his part adds depth to the group’s sound and starts the video off on the right foot. After that, Velarde steps in to do her part. Although she doesn’t sound much like Mariah Carey, she brings her own unique twist to the song and that takes it to a whole new level. Her voice has a nice soul and R&B kick to it, and her facial expressions and body language deepen the emotions behind the performance.
The entire time, the group’s voices all blend together perfectly to create a stunning symphony of sound. After that, it’s time for Bugoy Drilon to shine in the second verse.
For his part, Drilon hits his runs superbly and his tone is simple and relaxing.
His voice is the one that provides balances between the groups’ highs and lows. This way, they all strike a perfect chord when they come together.
For our part, he sang his verse with perfect delivery!
Known to be a good songwriter and arranger, Daryl Ong did the next part of the bridge.
Once again, Ong is able to hit the high notes along with Velarde in their duet—and the result was fantastic.
As it turns out, the group started as contestants on different singing competitions in the Philippines.
Pangilinan was discovered when he appeared on X-Factor Philippines. Though he didn’t make it all the way through, he was able to create a fan base because of his gentle voice and his good looks. Bugoy also appeared on a reality show called Philippine Dream Academy. Lastly, Ong was a contestant of the Philippine version of The Voice.
Although none of the men won any of the shows they participated in, they were still favored by the audience and ended up more famous than the winners! From their television success, they created their own group named Budakhel and became really popular on social media.
Last but not the least, Velarde was a winner on X-Factor but not in the same year that Ong performed. Even so, she toppled all other competitors to become the queen that season!
Since joining forces, all of them have seen their careers surge.
When this video was uploaded on YouTube last October 2018, it rose to fame became a trending video. Since then, it has amassed some 33 million views on the platform and has been viewed all around the world.
Needless to say, we’re sure to see more of this talented quartet! Be sure to watch their whole performance in the link below:
