Line dancing is a fun and inclusive group activity that people of all ages and fitness levels can partake in. And that’s part of the reason it has become so popular around the world.
You’ve likely seen the dance style before – groups of people stand in lines and perform a repeated series of steps at the same time, either facing each other or all dancing in the same direction.
Line dancing is big in the U.S. but has made its way to Australia in recent decades as well and now the country holds regional as well as international competitions.
In 2013, the New South Wales (NSW) Line Dance Competition was held in Sydney, Australia and one performance from the event has gone viral. The regional event hosted dozens of teams but it was a group called The Hotfoot Line Dance Team that stole the show.
While many of the moves look country western in origin, line dance has come to incorporate much more than that in addition to a wide range of musical accompaniment.
But this group went more traditional with their song choice, selecting Big and Rich’s “Fake I.D.” (ft. Gretchen Wilson). Even the official music video for the song features line dancing, so it’s clearly the perfect tune for a two-step.
As the team takes the floor they bring out one dancer who starts them off as the rest dance onto the floor.
Then they get ready to line up and get groovin’!
The rousing routine is so popular that it’s now been viewed over 2.5 million times since it was posted in 2013. And it earned some glowing comments.
“You guys are awesome! Love the enthusiasm! This is the next line dance I’m learning,” exclaimed one viewer.
“I got so sucked into this video I actually clapped like I was there! lol,” said another fan.
Since the line dance to “Fake ID” is one you can learn from the original Big & Rich video, you can indeed learn it at home if you wish.
And just because you might not look like a championship-qualifying dancer doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. In fact, various dancers have broken down the steps online, including one you can view here.
But to really get a good idea about how it looks as a dance you have to watch the group performance.
And the way this team can synchronize their moves is seriously impressive.
Taps, twists, heel digs, and pivots all spice up and already engaging performance by these talented dancers.
If you’d like to get into line dancing in general but aren’t ready for a class and don’t have the ability to follow along on YouTube, “step sheets” are available to teach some of the most popular dances. All you have to do is Google them! They’re even better when used in conjunction with the visuals you can find online though.
Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t look like these dancers right away – it’s going to take some serious practice.
“We have a similar dance at our line dancing bar in Ohio, but this one is HARD, props to y’all,” admitted one viewer.
If you want to learn from the pros, classes are available around the world and they welcome all talent levels, body types, and ages.
