When it comes to reality competition shows, few are as surprising and consistently interesting as The Voice.
For those who don’t know, The Voice is an international franchise that started in Holland and has since become a worldwide phenomenon. The show works somewhat differently from similar shows.
Instead of walking out and talking to the judges right away, each contestant appears before the panel first in a “blind audition.” As they start singing, the judges can hit their buzzers to turn around to see who’s performing. At that point, the judges compete to get the contestants on their own teams.
At the end of the show, there’s one winning contestant and one winning judge as well.
Needless to say, the show’s format has become hugely popular and has turned into an international franchise.
Each version of the show has the same format, but each country also has its own uniquely talented contestants. Though it’s always people singing and performing, the styles of music often differ—and where they draw inspiration from differs as well.
The performance we’re talking about today comes from The Voice Portugal, specifically the show’s 2016 season.
Though it had plenty of talented contestants, one who continually stood out was Fernando Daniel.
Daniel made it through the audition rounds on his charisma and the strength of his voice, but some of his other songs were equally amazing.
Towards the middle of the show, he got a chance to sing “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You” by Michael Bolton for the crowd.
Now while Michael Bolton is a well-known name all around the world, there’s something a little unusual about him being an inspiration to singers all the way over in Portugal. Regardless, Daniel was confident in his song choice.
After he walks out on stage, the backing music starts playing and Daniel gets ready to sing.
From the very beginning, Daniel’s voice is raspy and soulful.
No matter what associations people may have with Michael Bolton, Daniel’s voice takes the original song and makes it completely his own!
Though the initial verse is amazing, it all really picks up when he gets to the chorus. As his voice soars through the notes, the crowd can’t help but to cheer and applaud right in the middle of it!
Still, the performance is far from over.
While the original song is a slower ballad, Daniel’s version brings the tempo and intensity a bit up by including some rock influence.
While all the notes he sings are right on target, most impressive is how much pain and passion he puts behind it all in the last verse!
His rock-inspired vocals give the song a whole new life without losing any of the precision and heart that make the original such a classic. When it’s finally over, Daniel hits one last note and takes a bow.
With that, the audience gives him a huge round of applause!
Needless to say, Daniel’s performance was pretty incredible—and has nearly seven million views on YouTube so far.
Above all, singers like Daniel show the world exactly why the show remains so popular to this day.
Although it may seem like everything has been discovered or all the talent has been seen, there are always more people out there with gifts that ought to be shared. Though we’re not sure how it will happen, Daniel definitely has a future in music!
Congratulations to Fernando Daniel on another amazing performance! Watch the full thing in the link below:
