While most of us might think of it as an American show, The Voice is actually a worldwide franchise that started in Holland.
Since then, it has become an international franchise with spin-offs and country-specific shows all over the world. In all of its different versions, the format is the same.
In each case, participants appear in front of a panel of judges for a “blind audition.” They sing while they judges’ backs are turned. If the judges like what they hear, they can hit their buzzers to turn around and compete to get the performer on their team.
In each season, there’s a winning contestant and a winning judge.
The performance we’re talking about today took place on the 2016 season of The Voice Portugal.
The singer in question was Fernando Daniel, a talented performer who had already made it past the audition rounds.
As the competition got tougher and tougher, he stepped out to sing a version of “Dancing On My Own,” a song originally recorded by Robyn. Still, the song got a new life after Calum Scott sung it on Britain’s Got Talent—he even later recorded his own official cover of the song and released it as a single.
For his performance, Daniel was inspired by Scott’s version.
Before anything else, some slow piano music starts playing as a backing track and the lights go down.
After that, Daniel takes a deep breath and begins. From the very beginning, it’s clear that Daniel has an incredibly soulful voice. While the original version of the song is more of an upbeat dance song with an ironic twist.
In Daniel’s take on it, it becomes much clearer how sad the main lyrics are and all the judges are paying complete attention. Beyond that, all the other contestants are looking a little bit nervous.
Still, he’s only halfway through the performance!
At the midpoint, he sweeps the microphone stand aside and marches out to the front of the stage.
Although the first half was great, Daniel seems to find an entirely new level of power and soulfulness to finish the song out. Although these performances usually have some interruptions or cheering from the crowd,
Daniel’s voice is so powerful that everybody in the room is completely silent—you could even hear a pin drop! Towards the very end, Daniel takes a few more huge swings on big notes and nails them all.
When it’s all over, the crowd gives him a huge round of applause!
Since the video was posted online, it has gotten some 17 million views on YouTube!
While there have been plenty of great performances on The Voice over the years, this one is particularly powerful. Though it goes without saying, The Voice Portugal isn’t necessarily a hugely popular show worldwide.
Regardless, this video has made the rounds on the strength of Daniel’s raw talent and his perfect interpretation of the song he choice. Although it’s unclear where he’ll go from here, Daniel definitely has a potential future in music if he keeps going like this!
