When 12-year-old Fazlin Naidoo took the stage at South Africa’s Got Talent, the judges had no idea what they were about to witness.
Fazlin has always loved singing and it used to simply be a hobby for her. Soon, however, she started to take her vocal capabilities more seriously and started taking professional lessons. And although she’s only 12-year-old, she has certainly perfected her craft.
Fazlin’s family encourages her before she walks out for her audition, the singer even drinks a little bit of honey to help with her vocal cords. Then, she walks confidently out onto the stage.
The judges ask Fazlin what she’ll be doing for them that day and she responded with “singing.” Then, the judges ask her if she’s good, which she confidently nods her head and says yes.
“Are you very good?” the judge asks, and Fazlin says “yes” with a smile. “Let’s find out,” he says.
Fazlin begins to sing “Down” by Marion Hill and the judges are immediately impressed by the sultry and smooth voice that is coming from the pre-teen’s mouth.
The judge that was questioning her abilities earlier is now thoroughly blown away by her performance. Just a few seconds in and he’s already saying “wow!” Soon, the beat of the song picks up and Fazlin breaks into a scat that has the entire room cheering.
Fazlin finishes her audition and by the looks on the judges’ faces – it was a complete success.
Shocked by the fact that she is just 12-years-old, the judges reassure Fazlin that she is most certainly going places when it comes to her singing career. To have such control over her voice at such a young age is seriously impressive.
Because of her unbelievable talent, judge Shado Twala knows she has to use the Golden Buzzer for Fazlin. “Each judge gets to use the golden buzzer once in the season for a special act that they really believe can make it to the top. This sends the contestants straight through to the live semi-final rounds,” explains Channel 24.
Fazlin was hoping to impress all of the judges, of course, but Shado Twala is who she wanted to impress the most. So, it was an honor for her to have pressed the Golden Buzzer.
It was the first Golden Buzzer of the season and Fazlin couldn’t have been more grateful for the recognition.
“It was unbelievable, I’ve seen that moment on TV so many times, and to actually live it was surreal,” she told Channel 24.
Fazlin says that one day, she would like to work with Simon Cowell and, one of her biggest idols, Adele, who she is also influenced by. Other musical inspirations for the 12-year-old super-talent are Ariana Grande, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Hudson, and Shawn Mendez, although, Fazlin says she doesn’t want to be put in a box.
“There are also many incredibly talented people across the globe, when you hear their stories of determination and success, it inspires me to keep pushing towards my goals in life,” she adds.
When she was asked about how she would pick her song for the semi-finals, she replied:
“I’m doing various songs and getting my family to give me their opinions. Choosing the right song is proving more difficult that I thought. I just have to find the right song and pull out all the stops.”
