The hardest thing parents have to go through is watching their children suffer and not being able to do anything for them. Zach Oxendine knows this all too well. His young son, Judah, was born prematurely at just 23 weeks gestation. He weighed just a little over a pound and had a lot of complications. Shortly after his birth, doctors had to rush to stop the bleeding in his brain.
There were times when they didn’t think the baby was going to make it.
He pulled through, but the complications caused him to have a lung disease and cerebral palsy and left him deaf. His parents were devastated for their baby but also happy that he had survived the first critical days.
Zach and his wife have always taken amazing care of Judah, but it’s not always easy.
They wish that they could talk to their son and that he didn’t have to struggle with so many things. Even though Judah is deaf, the family plays a lot of music to keep everyone’s spirits up. When the song “Boy” by Lee Brice came on the radio one day, Zach couldn’t help but take his young son up in his arms and hold him while he sang to him.
The lyrics to the song are:
“Boy, you’re gonna know it all
You’ll think you’re 10 feet tall
And run like you’re bulletproof
And total a car or two
Boy, you’re gonna hate this town
Wish you could burn it down
That fire in your eyes is 20 counties wide
But boy, you’re gonna love 17
And boy, you’ll do some stupid things
You’re gonna drive and kiss
And throw a punch
And grow up way too fast
You’re gonna drop the ball
Hit the wall
And break some hearts like glass
I know you will, ’cause you’re a part of me
You’re gonna be so stubborn
You get that from your mother
I already see it now, you weren’t built for backing down
And boy, there’ll be a small-town nights
And you’ll fall for her sky-blue eyes
And when she’s in your hands
You’ll think you’re a man and not a boy
She’ll make you lose your mind, boy
She’ll be every reason why
You’re gonna drive and kiss
And throw a punch
And grow up way too fast
You’re gonna drop the ball
Hit the wall
And break some hearts like glass
I know you will, ’cause you’re a part of me
And a part of you will always be my boy
It’s 3 a.m. and I’d do anything to get you back to sleep
And that face will be the same one in the rear-view
The day I watch you leave
But boy, you’re gonna come back home
You’re gonna settle down
But you won’t feel the way I’m feelin’ now
Until you have a boy
He’s gonna know it all
He’ll think he’s 10 feet tall
And run like he’s bulletproof
And total a car or two”
Zach’s wife caught the moment on video.
Zach didn’t think Judah could understand what was happening since he couldn’t hear the lyrics, but as soon as Zach sat down on the couch, Judah looked up at him and gave him a big smile. It was at that point that Zach let the tears flow freely.
To Zach and his wife, Judah’s smile meant that even though he couldn’t understand the lyrics, he knew that his dad loved him.
It also made his parents realize that he is happy and they are doing a great job taking care of him. They may not be able to take away his health problems, but they can continue to give him lots of love.
Judah is clearly a happy little guy.
With everything going on, his smile motivates his parents to continue to make life as easy and comfortable for their little guy as they can. Hopefully, baby Judah has a long and happy life ahead of him with plenty of music and hugs.
