The origin of music is unknown, but it has always been a part of our lives.
In general, we might think of ourselves as the only creatures who can appreciate this kind of creation. Still, this turns out to not be entirely true—and some talented musicians have taken to playing music to animals to prove how untrue it is. This video from five years ago is a clear-cut example of a genuine animal reaction towards music!
As it turns out, this guy summoned a gigantic herd of cows with his trombone.
A man sets up his folding chair in the middle of a wide and calm meadow. In the frame it’s only him and his trombone, but without looking at the video title, you would not have the slightest idea of what is about to happen.
A familiar tune can be heard after this man blows several notes on his trombone. Right away, it’s recognizable as Lorde’s famous hit “Royals.” He plays the first few seconds of it by himself, sitting on his chair whilst playing the trombone until you can see something slowly appearing from the horizon.
As the music progresses, it becomes clear that there are cows slowly swarming ahead in the distance!
After quite some time, the cows exponentially increase in number. It’s clear that they’re all acting curious about what they’re hearing, and they slowly approach the origin of the sound.
Before long, all the cows are crowding up near the man, wagging their tails as they observe him closely. Before long, there’s an impressive number of cattle who are now serving as this man’s audience!
Farmer Derek went viral after this particular video got more than 17 million views.
The original video was uploaded on August 4th, 2014.
Even now, this video has still been receiving comments from various YouTube users. Some comments were hilarious memes and puns, though there are also some comments complaining about the YouTube algorithm:
“Why am I only seeing this for the first time?”
Farmer Derek, also known as Derek Klingenberg, has been using his farm friends as content for his YouTube videos. His videos feature popular music parodies with lyrics relating to life on the farm, though he also plays music for his cattle.
With these, he managed to rack up millions of views and a decent media presence. Still, despite a series of successes, he chose to stay and live a humble life on their family farm. This is one of his videos below.
How do animals exactly react to music?
After watching this, it’s clear animals differ in their response to music. To some animals, music might just be some unrecognizable noise. Even so, there are animals who react to music quite similarly to humans—like birds. for example. Many researchers have attempted to study animal psychology towards music from different angles.
For instance, some researchers have found that felines do not particularly care for human music.
Even so, there are some kinds of music specifically made for cats that garner some specific reactions—cats tend to purr around the speaker where the music is coming from, for example. Another specific example was that classical music makes dogs calmer, and cows produce more milk.
There’s plenty of animal videos on the internet—but this is one of the cutest ones we’ve ever seen!
If you didn’t think animals could love music as much as we could, let this video prove you wrong.
