For those who need a refresher, we were introduced to Gellert Grindelwald toward the end of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It would have seemed that he was going to be locked up for good, but this new film proves that Grindelwald is stronger than ever.

Eagle-eyed fans realized months ago that one new character in the film hadn’t been given a character name. Until now that is!

Claudia Kim is joining the Fantastic Beasts family and until this trailer, we had no idea what her character’s name was. But fans had strong opinions and they turned out to be right!

It would seem that Claudia is playing Nagini. Yes, the same Nagini that turns up in the Harry Potter series in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire with Lord Voldemort. Nagini is Voldemort’s trusted pet snake, who also doubled as one of his Horcruxes. So, we all know that her ending in the HP world isn’t exactly ideal.

Nagini is a witch in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald that is being held captive at a circus as an attraction. She makes one friend while in captivity – Credence Barebones. If the name sounds familiar, that is because Credence was front and center in the first film.

Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling revealed that Nagini is not an Animagus, but instead a new term that we’ve never heard of before. She is a Maledictus.

When she was asked if that meant that Nagini was predisposed to being evil, J.K. said:

Not at all. The slow transformation into a beast is beyond their control, but they aren’t destined to be evil.

And she added:

They’re different conditions. Maledictuses are always women, whereas werewolves can be either sex. The Maledictus carries a blood curse from birth, which is passed down from mother to daughter.

Now, we’ll hopefully get to learn even more about how the Fantastic Beasts films are deeply connected to the Harry Potter films. After all, Dumbledore plays a very vital role in both film series!

The full description for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is below:

At the end of the first film, the powerful dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander. But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise wizards and witches up to rule over all non-magical beings.

In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.
