The Carling family sure know how to set the bar high for quarantine activities. They don’t intend to, really. It’s just that they’re so incredibly talented that watching them enjoy music together at home is enough to rouse you to pick up an instrument, sing, or engage in something as creative.
With the coronavirus disease’s domino effect on families worldwide, it’s proven to be a real challenge, staying strong and remaining positive.
Thankfully, families like the Carlings inspire many others to pause, breathe, and stay calm while doing our part to battle the infectious disease.
They describe themselves as a “jazz band and Vaudeville show in one family”. (Source: Facebook)
Vaudeville is a theatrical genre made of comedians, singers, dancers, musicians, and even ventriloquists, acrobats, and plate-spinners. It was a platform for talents who could keep the audience interested for more than at least three minutes. It started back in the 1880s. Vaudeville was home to more than 25,000 performers and became the most sought after form of entertainment in America. It was such an essential part of communities that managers decided to take advantage and create bigger acts.
Inspired by Vaudeville, the Carlings definitely have that timeless appeal down pat: delightful, lively music, a classic aesthetic, and an overall vibe brimming with life and talent.
In this video, they demonstrate just how well they perform together by covering an oh-so-familiar Billie Holiday tune.
Situated in a sunlit spot outdoors with plants and trees for their backdrop, the Carlings effortlessly performed “I Cover The Waterfront” as if it were the most normal family activity.
14-year-old Idun Carling can immediately capture the attention of a room with her charming appearance and pleasant vocals. She sings so beautifully that it will make you feel as though you’ve gone straight to the 1940s, sitting and listening dreamily in a room brimming with conversation, the faint sound of glasses clinking and drinks being poured as Billie Holiday’s voice fills the room.
“I cover the waterfront
I’m watching the sea
Will the one I love
be coming back to me?”
Idun Carling’s voice highlights the poignant message of the song, a dreamy atmosphere created by the harmonious instrumental accompaniment. It wouldn’t be as breathtaking a performance if it weren’t for the talent of Viggo Carling, Manav Budrahni, Cougar Karson, Pritish Budrahni, Gunhild Carling, and Johan Blome.
It was indeed a family affair unlike any other. You have your daddy-daughter duos and your husband and wife team up, but you’ve never seen a group of individuals band together so flawlessly like the Carlings.
So if you’re feeling a bit on edge because of staying quarantined for so long, don’t fret.
Instead, let the Carlings remind you that there are many ways to cope with the stress of it all.
Allow the romantic voice of Idun Carling and the smooth blend of instruments to ease you into your calmest state and take you back with this cover of “I Cover The Waterfront.”
