Drums are the rhythmic base of nearly all music.
It is the most visceral and the most physical. It’s so muscle-oriented that it requires full-body mobility.
Because of that (and because of prejudice against women), women were discouraged from playing the drums—or any other instrument that wasn’t considered “ladylike.”
Even Karen Carpenter, a highly accomplished drummer in the 1960s, who became a musical icon with her brother, started out playing drums with small appearances on shows.
Carpenter’s managers pushed her to focus on singing instead because people don’t trust her that she won’t mess it up.
This wasn’t the case for A-Yeon, a Korean woman who stunned her million subscribers with a metal version of Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger.”
For those who don’t know, A-Yeon is a South Korean musician and singer under HMI Entertainment.
She is a former member and drummer of the female band Bebop, who officially debuted on February 14, 2014 with other members Ji In and Ju Woo.
However the band disbanded last June 2016, so she decided to pursue her solo career made her solo debut on July 28, 2018 with the single “Midsummer Night.”
She also continued her passion for drumming by setting up a YouTube channel in 2015 where she posts drum covers of different songs from rock songs to anime soundtracks.
The double-platinum-certified hit “Eye of the Tiger” is the theme song for Sylvester Stallone’s motion picture Rocky III.
In 1982, Stallone asked the American rock band Survivor, composed of Jim Peterik and Frankie Sullivan, to provide a theme song for Rocky III.
Stallone had heard “Poor Man’s Son” and wanted a song similar to that and Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust.” The band agreed to his request and soon came up with “Eye of the Tiger.” The new song featured a faster tempo than “Poor Man’s Son” while still incorporating the stylish, nearly identical power chords.
The song went on to win the band the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
It was also voted Best New Song by the People’s Choice Awards and received an Academy Award nomination.
Rocky III is a 1982 American sports drama film written, directed by, and starring Sylvester Stallone. It is the third installment in the Rocky film series.
In the red corner, wearing black sportswear and hailing all the way from South Korea, give it up for A-Yeon!
In a video uploaded in 2018, she impressed everyone with her drumming skills.
Don’t be fooled by her slim figure and glass white skin because the girl is a beast in front of the drum kit. She didn’t let gender limit herself as a musician; instead, she used it to her edge as she showcases her skills in all the videos she uploads.
Drums are the world’s oldest and most ubiquitous musical instruments.
Although it’s a famous song, she still brings a whole new edge to it with her energetic drumming!
