At some point, the internet became a little bit fixated on “evolution” videos.

For those who don’t know what we’re talking about, think back to the extremely popular “Evolution of Dance” video posted online by Judson Laipply in 2006. Although it has since been de-seated from its throne, the clip was one of the most viewed clips on YouTube for a while!

Although Laipply’s original clip has faded with time, the concept has proven itself as one of several surefire paths to viral success.

And the clip we’re talking about today is the world’s newest example.

The video we’re talking about was uploaded by Vinheteiro, a channel dedicate to uploading impressive musical performances.

In this one, a pianist sits in front of a classical piano determined to play the “Evolution of Music.” Still, this isn’t a video like any other evolution genre video.

In this one, the pianist spans all the way from 1680 AD to 2017, when the clip was posted! Needless to say, that’s a pretty ambitious undertaking… but he’s ready to do it all with aplomb.

The medley begins in 1680, with Pachelbel’s “Canon in D.”

Obviously, everybody knows this simple classical composition—but things get a little more complicated from there.

After Pachelbel, there are pieces by Handel, Vivaldi, Boccherini and Mozart that take us all the way into the 1780s. After that, there’s Beethoven, Haydn, Schubert, Chopin and many more bringing us through the early 1800s.

The entire time, the pianist shows impressive control and skill—and often doesn’t even look at the piano as he plays!

Still, he’s only getting warmed up with this early classical compositions.

After that, he gets into Tchaikovsky, Eric Satie, Korsakov and more as he breaks into the 1900s.

In 1902, the ever-popular beginner’s piano piece “The Entertainer” crops up, and after that, Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” follows it. Still, all the compositions are from as far back as the 1930s.

Before long, things get interesting—as he enters the 1970s, he plays “Disco Inferno.” And on the back of that, he plays the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams” from 1983. After that, it’s Madonna in 1984!

Still, he’s only getting started!

After that, he plays some electronic and house tracks on the piano from the 1980s before breaking into the 1990s.

Starting things off is “Barbie Girl” by Aqua in 1997—though he follows that up with “Blue” by Eiffel 65. After all that, he goes into the 2000s with Beyoncé’s “Halo” and proceeds to Lady Gaga’s “Telephone.”

What’s interesting is how well some of these pieces work as classical compositions on the piano! By starting so far back in time, it’s a lot easier to see a continuum between all these different pieces.

When it’s finally over, the pianist gives a loud shake and tells people to subscribe!

Since the video was posted, it has become a huge hit online with more than 18 million views on YouTube!

Although there are plenty of talented pianists out there online, there’s something about this concept that works so well.

While plenty of people can play old music, and plenty of people can play new music, it takes some real skill to play the entire range so flawlessly.
