Grease is the word. It has been the word for decades and will continue to be the word for some time. It’s the iconic musical most notably adapted for the screen starring Olivia Newton John and John Travolta. You know the one, greasers in leather jackets with their hair slicked back saying things like “A hickey from Kenickie’s like a Hallmark card.” Sandy, a newcomer to their town joins their school as an innocent prude…until she isn’t any more.
It’s an iconic musical, inspiring every generation since to do their own homages.
Even two incredible 4-year-olds!
Well scoot over Olivia and John, there’s a new top Sandy and Danny in town! and they’ve got all the raw talent you could possibly want. All kitted out in the instantly recognizable greaser leather jacket, and with a stitch-perfect Sandy bodysuit, Everleigh and Diesel look the parts and play them fantastically. If Grease is the time and the place, this is the motion.
They’ve got the classic moves down.
The storytelling of the “You’re the One That I Want” sequence remains true in this routine, even integrating the classic “Sandy pushing Danny backwards” move. I love that these kids are obviously familiar with the Grease musical, and that they are the next step in its immortality as one of the greatest musicals of all time.
And they’ve got skills too!
Not content to simply skip around and phone it in with basic moves, they push the envelope for a 4-year-old’s performance. One such move includes Diesel’s awesome knee slide which he does with admirable enthusiasm across the stage. That’s some true John Travolta level dancing right there. Everleigh does as well with her gymnastic level stretch poses, and she has such great timing and skill and it’s clear that they practice their routine often.
Then just when you think little Diesel couldn’t be any cooler…
He drives a MOTORBIKE onto stage! It’s a Diesel-sized motorbike obviously, and he confidently rides it across the stage while Everleigh does one of her signature stretches. The audience go wild for this ultimate display of cool.
Of course if you’re going to do a Grease homage and you’ve got a vehicle parked behind you…
You’ve got to sing “Greased Lightning”! Possibly the most iconic thing John Travolta has ever done must be the slow arm sweep during the song Greased Lightning. I’m pretty sure it’s illegal to perform a song from Grease without doing this emblematic move at least once. Diesel is a natural too, confidently doing the moves in a way that would make Danny Zuko himself proud.
And when they finally come together at the end (Like shoo-bop sha wadda wadda yippity boom de boom), it’s amazing.
What a talented young duo. This performance won them the first prize in their age category at the KAR Dance Competition. They clearly have a bright dance-filled future ahead of them, and if they keep up this level of performance, heck, they may just be cast in the inevitable remake one day.
