Need a smile? How about watching a group of high school pals lip-sync to a compilation of Queen songs for Hillcrest Lutheran Academy‘s 2019 talent show?
That’s probably not what you were thinking would brighten your day, right?
It all becomes clear
Things start off a little fuzzy as the young men edited their video to include an intro of Freddie Mercury and guitarist Brian May preparing for a 1986 concert in London.
But, hey, you have to set the stage somehow, right?
As Mercury takes the stage, the screen goes dark. And emerging from that darkness are 4 high schoolers standing in the snow, doing their best Queen impression.
Finally, it becomes clear what’s going on. They ARE the members of Queen, transported through time to Fergus Falls, Minnesota on a balmy 2-degree day.
Needless to say, our time-travelers not only think everyone looks a bit wonky in their new environment, but they’re not exactly dressed for the weather.
Don’t stop them now
As they run to find warmth, the Queen hit “Don’t Stop Me Now” plays in the background.
Unfortunately, it looks like they have a ways to go before they find shelter.
As “the band” comes across the school, they spot a sign outside – for a talent show! What luck!
We have the feeling they’re going to enter.
Rocking the talent show
As they take the stage, their first song for the show is “We Will Rock You,” and you can see the audience laughing as the guys do their best Queen impressions.
Now, if you’re finding this a little cringeworthy, it’s important to note that they did too and even mentioned it in their caption.
Alas, no Queen tribute would be complete without taking a stab at “Bohemian Rhapsody.” And they do get the lighting right!
It’s a pretty hard song to pull off, but since they’re lip-synching and only pretending to play the instruments, there’s very little to lose.
They are the champions
We have to admit, this is A LOT of effort to put into a lip-synching performance for a talent show. But we appreciate that they’re willing to get up on stage and make fun of themselves to some extent.
After some back-and-forth, Freddie Mercury-style, with the audience, the group launches into their final hit – “We Will Rock You.”
And at least that lets them end on a high note and get the audience clapping in anticipation!
The young men give it their all in the end, and we’re pretty sure they made some good memories while they were at it.
Sadly, there was no response when a commenter asked if they actually won the talent show or not. But with the benefits of time travel up their sleeve, we’re sure they found a way.
(Oh, and for what it’s worth, there’s also more of a slideshow version of the performance – because who doesn’t love a slideshow?!)
And while one commenter called them “Queen on a budget,” another said, “These are the kind of people We should all aspire to be like.”
We’ll settle for a good laugh – or at least a smile. And that’s what they gave us.
