Watching Eastview’s jazz performance will have you questioning what type of dance level are you watching. Is this a professional dance team? College level? It will surprise you to learn that Eastview’s dance team is not a professional or even college level dance team. They are a high school dance team that dances as if they are already at the professional level.
These high schoolers will blow you away with their jazz performance.
The Eastview dance team’s high school is based in Apple Valley, Minnesota, but they make their highly anticipated dance performances in Minneapolis, Minnesota every year for state finals. The team has won the state finals, in jazz dance, five times since 2000 and have placed in the top three eight times. This is a dance team that is fierce in competitions every year they compete.
All That Jazz Dance Company defines jazz dance as combining, “…techniques of classical ballet and modern dance with the current forms of popular dance. Jazz also has its own movement vocabulary ranging from the isolation of certain body parts to the movement of the entire body with the accents of musical rhythms. Jazz dance can take on many different characteristics and styles, including Street Jazz, Percussive, Broadway, Contemporary and Lyrical. Jazz … can be patterned in any of these styles or a combination of them. Emphasis is on the importance of energy, rhythmical accuracy, and style.”
As jazz combines multiple dance characteristics, you will notice throughout their performance the beautiful balletic choreography incorporated.
Eastview’s performance was choreographed to the Lady Gaga song “Always Remember Us This Way.” This song was sung in the movie A Star is Born. It is an emotional song and the Eastview dance team created an emotional performance to coincide perfectly with their song choice. There are sixteen dance members dancing.
This many dancers can make it difficult to dance in unison, but these girls spin and dance as one.
Watching the girls move as one is beautiful but it is the moments when they separate that really stand out. The performance has multiple moments where they will break in groups of two or three and almost look as if they are dancing against each other. The emotion really shines during these moments.
Do you prefer their dancing in unison or separately in groups?
The Eastview dance team was awarded third place for their jazz performance. Deservedly so!
If these dancers are already this amazing at a high school level, their dancing futures are very bright. Their official website states that six members that graduated in 2019 went on to be dance team members at an array of different colleges. That is nothing new for this dance team, that can boast of their alumni going on to dance at the college level throughout the years.
You will not be the only viewer stunned by the talent of this high school dance team. Some viewers have commented,
“I can’t stop watching. this performance was amazing.”
“I stopped, rewound, and watched the soloist at 2:13 at least 15 times.”
