Though we often put mental limits on ourselves, the truth is that you can follow your passions at any age.
The main thing that trips people up when it comes to pursuing an artistic career is that it takes time to identify our talents and passions. On the other hand, if we don’t believe in ourselves enough from early on, that can also keep us from fulfilling our dreams. Fortunately, shows like The X Factor and the Got Talent franchise allow people of any age to participate and perform.
And that’s what made this audition from The X Factor’s 2012 season so impressive.
The performer in question was Dinah Jane Hansen, a 15-year-old from Santa Ana, California.
As she explains, she lives in a house with her parents, her mom’s parents, her uncle and a ton of kids. Altogether, there are about 20 people under one roof!
As she says, it’s so hard to sleep at night because there are so many kids running around. Above all though, she says, she’s excited to sing in front of her idol, Britney Spears!
After she explains her whole story to the people backstage, she walks out onstage to meet the judges.
The first thing that everyone seems to notice about her is that she looks so much older than she says she is!
The judges also can’t believe how many people they have crammed in their house. Without much further ado, though, the judges clear the way for her to perform. After a moment, the backing track starts playing “If I Were A Boy” by Beyoncé.
Needless to say, taking on any Beyoncé song is a pretty big challenge. Not only are her many songs hugely beloved by her fans, her signature voice is also pretty hard to emulate!
Still, Dinah seems up for the challenge and takes a deep breath.
When she starts singing, the whole crowd is shocked—she has so much control over her voice!
The song starts about as low as it’s possible to sing and gradually gets higher bit by bit. When it gets to the chorus, Dinah’s voice absolutely soars! It doesn’t take long for the crowd to get on their feet.
Although most people are afraid of not rising to the quality of the original song, Dinah seems to even go above and beyond the original! After hearing her full range, judge Simon Cowell cuts the performance short.
With that, the whole crowd gives her a standing ovation!
After all that, it’s time for the judges to give their feedback.
Right off the bat, the judges tell her that it was a risky choice… but she may have even gone above and beyond the original. Judge Britney Spears tells Dinah that she made her day and judge Demi Lovato tells her that she got the chills during the performance!
Finally, it’s time for Simon Cowell to give his feedback, and he puts it simply: she is the reason why they came to her city! Finally, they tally the vote—and Dinah gets four yeses! Even though she’s so young, it’s clear Dinah has a huge musical career ahead of her.
