Dick Van Dyke and his wife Arlene Silver have a 46-year age gap, but the veteran actor and entertainer proved that he has no problem keeping up with her.
We all know Mr. Van Dyke as the man with the catchy songs and dance moves in films our grandparents adored.
And he’s still got it!
He says that performing is his, “favorite thing to do. It’s kind of my retirement amusement. I don’t play golf. I have more fun singing and dancing.”
Arlene feels the same way.
Arlene Silver is a producer and former makeup artist who met Van Dyke in 2007 at the 13th Screen Actors Guild Awards.
She was there for work while he was presenting Julie Andrews with a lifetime achievement award.
“I remember seeing Dick at the catering table with his bow tie and his big smile. Right when I sat down, he was sitting next to me. He said, ‘Hi, I’m Dick,'” Silver shared. “The first thing I asked him was, ‘Weren’t you in ‘Mary Poppins’?’ I wasn’t sure.”
Mary Poppins!
The couple tied the knot in 2012 and the actor told Parade, “It’s one of the smartest moves I ever made. She makes me happy. She’s very mature for her age, and I’m very immature for my age, so it’s just about right!”
This is Van Dyke’s second marriage.
And he’s out to prove that he is still young at heart.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!
The couple set out to record their first song together, which was also a first for Arlene.
It all starts with Dick and Arlene being driven to the studio where a piano player is shown playing jazz chords as the couple walk inside.
Dick and Arlene walk through the hallway with pictures of famous singers who has recorded there.
They look around, reading names out in shock, and Dick says it is his first time being in this recording studio, though he has seen it from the outside.
He even saw it get built!
The recording team put the ‘Frank Mic’ on him, as in the same microphone that Frank Sinatra used.
The guitarist puts his hands up and the musicians begin playing together.
A pianist, drummer, sax player, and bassist are all smiles as they create beautiful music together.
Dick sings the first verse across from Arlene, and she soon picks up the second verse. The couple join together in the song’s chorus, and Dick is obviously enjoying himself.
“And if you should survive to 105
Look at all you’ll derive Out of being alive”
Such a cute, happy tune!
You can imagine the dance moves Dick would be doing for this one.
And he does with his wife!
An instrumental portion comes in and soon, Dick is in a suit and Arlene in a nice dress as they spin and dance around to the music.
They continue singing with shots of many elderly personalities shown on screen, emphasizing the words “young at heart” as they duet.
It’s a lovely duet topped off with an even sweeter embrace from the wonderful Van Dykes!
Watch their joyful duet in the video below – Dick’s still got it!
