Some music is perfectly enjoyed sitting down and taking it all in.
Yet other music produces such electrifying energy that there’s nothing you can do short of getting up to dance. In fact, when a band has a good groove going, sitting still is the last thing possible! Music is so powerful that it can completely captivate us and seize all of our senses.
Take the soulful blues and jazz outfit, the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio.
When they shared their warm-up set from the Upstream Music Festival in 2017 the internet went wild. And to think, this is only a warm-up!
One watch and you’ll also be swept away in their contagious and funky jam.
The trio, also known as DLO3, set the stage ablaze with their performance at Little London Plane.
This American jazz band highlights soulful work with everything they do.
Initially hitting the scene in 2015, they enjoyed much success a few years later with their debut album Close But No Cigar, which charted at number one on the U.S Contemporary Jazz Albums chart.
And in 2017, they laid it all on the line with this hot to trot warm-up performance.
The video was shot and recorded by KEXP, a nonprofit arts organization that works to support and deliver new music globally through their radio station and YouTube channel.
The video begins with the organist, Delvon Lammar Dumas, greeting the crowd.
He introduces his band and proceeds to settle into their warm-up session. A soft riff rings out on the guitar before the pace picks up.
And before you know it, the band is jamming on in the most delightful cruise control.
The organ kicks in along with the drums, and the band heads right into “Move On Up” by Curtis Mayfield.
The video production takes turns switching camera-views from one instrument to the next, illustrating the band’s effortless connection.
No sooner are your ears graced with the presence of pure music, an electrifying thing indeed. As guitarist Jimmy James lays down the melody, and drummer David McGraw keeps a steady tempo, Dumas improvises seamlessly across the keys of his organ. Together, they deliver the full package.
After pleasing the audience with classic Curtis Mayfield, they blend into an original song entitled “Memphis.”
Off of their 2018 debut album, they prove that their original work is just as masterful as the greats they pay homage to. This groovy hit takes the room over in a fit of soul and jazz.
And finally, they sweeten the crowd with an improvisational jam-session that really brings everything home.
American Song Writer has said this about the passionate trio:
“In a way, Lamarr has a super power. And his on-stage brother in music, guitarist Jimmy James, shares it. Together, the two trade licks and riffs while performing, upping the ante with a line from Eric Clapton here, Robert Johnson there, David Bowie here and Aretha Franklin there. It’s a type of sampling that has a long history in soul and jazz music and it’s one that rivets DLO3’s audiences, from the United States to Europe.”
And Dumas’ passion is ever evident.
In the same interview he went on to say:
“The other thing I love is what the music does to other people. They always say music is ‘the food for your soul.’ When you feed the people, man, there’s no better feeling than that.”
