The iconic white mask and rose are possibly the strongest signifiers of The Phantom of the Opera. The famous musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber has inspired generations of singers, actors dancers, and even…figure skaters?
The songs from what is arguably Webber’s most recognized musical (if we forget about CATS for a second), and all it takes is a few bars of that powerful organ to get us on board with the big sound of those dramatic songs.
Meryl Davis & Charlie White wow the crowd with their routine to a medley of The Phantom’s biggest tunes.
They start off striking some pretty dramatic poses.
It seems that the major strength of this two-person team is their flare for the dramatic element of their performance. Commenters on the video agree:
“They really achieve the emotion of the songs, i was scared they wouldnt do justice to this amazing musical but they did! <3 <3”- K
You got it K! If you’re going to perform to songs from a musical as recognized as The Phantom Of the Opera, you had better bring the drama!
They achieve such technical moves at mind blowing speed!
If you’re squeamish, then best look through your fingers, because this couple attempt some serious stunts!
It’s a good thing they’re as talented as they are, otherwise they could catch some serious injuries. As it happens though, they pull off these ridiculous moves as if it’s nothing.
And among the high-flying stunts, they still do justice to the narrative.
The story of the Phantom, and Christine Daaé is a mysterious tale of love and secrecy, and this bladed duo perform this relationship brilliantly.
And you’d consider it showing off if this wasn’t a competition!
They manage such dazzling moves as simultaneous spins while flying across the ice. They even manage to hold such spectacular poses while skating backwards. I can hardly even skate going forward, let along backward, balancing on one foot AND contorting you body every which way.
And if that wan’t enough, you’ve got to see how they achieve these mind boggling acrobatics.
Just imagine the strength and coordination it takes to pull off this move, sitting on someone’s back while they rocket backward over the ice…on one foot! You’ve just got to see how they transition in and out of each of these amazing maneuvers.
You can’t believe how perfectly in-sync they are!
As if they have some supernatural mental connection, they move perfectly in time, not a fraction of a second apart. It’s clear that not only are these two figure skaters remarkably talented, but they must dedicate a huge amount of time and effort to rehearsing and training.
And it’s not just Meryl who gets to fly!
With their simultaneous spins and Charlie’s own dazzling jumps, he proves himself to be just as capable of the acrobatics as Meryl is. They really are a perfectly matched pair of star competitors.
