It’s easy to get caught up in the moment of wanting that brand new shiny piece of jewelry or latest electronic device, but getting lost in those means that we’re losing sight of the bigger picture, of what’s really important.
Darius Rucker’s timeless holiday classic is a reminder for everyone to think about the meaningful things in life. The irreplaceable ones that many take for granted.
His 2014 release, “What God Wants For Christmas,” wowed fans as he sang lyrics that many Christmas songs fail to ever convey. For lots of people, it’s the gift-wrapped presents of the holidays that makes them happy, or the fancy new outfit to wear on New Year’s Eve, and although all of those things are fun — they’re fleeting.
Rucker’s holiday message goes much deeper than that. He challenges people to think about what God might want for Christmas instead. The lyrics suggest peace on Earth or more love within our brothers and sisters.
His deep and elegant voice make a plea for everyone to take a moment and slow down to ask questions we may have never asked before.
The song is one of two original songs on Rucker’s ‘Home for the Holidays’ album. It all started with him asking himself the question, “I wonder what God would want for Christmas?” and thought it would be a great song title.
“We sat down and the first thing I did was I Googled ‘What God Wants for Christmas,’ and I couldn’t believe no one had ever written that,” Rucker said on SongFacts. “Of all the Christmas songs and all the ideas people have had no one had ever written ‘I Wonder What God Wants for Christmas’ and that was crazy to me.”
Rucker wanted to create a song that would be listened to during the holiday season to spread a powerful message that would carry on throughout the year.
“We wanted to write one of those songs that years from now people are still listening to and people are still – and it’s important to people,” he said. “We wanted to put God back in Christmas, and that’s what we tried to do with that song.”
A big part of Rucker’s inspiration for the song, and also the music video, was the fact that he was on the board of the Children’s Hospital at the Medical University of South Carolina.
“We just wanted to show that there’s other sides of Christmas other than you just being with your family and opening gifts and stuff like that. There’s other things. There’s other things going on in the world [during] Christmas, and we wanted to show just a little piece of that.”
Even though the holidays are coming to an end, Rucker’s beautiful message in the video below is something we should try to reflect on every day of every season.
