Some of the most memorable auditions on America’s Got Talent are often outshone by the judges’ commentary, not the actual audition.
When Daniel Emmet auditioned for America’s Got Talent with an original song, it seemed to be going well.
The 25-year-old New Yorker is a classical-crossover singer with some pretty big pipes.
While he belted out his song, the judges all seemed to be into it, except for one judge. Simon Cowell could be seen visibly not enjoying the audition.
He appeared to be considering what to do about his lack of interest. Rather than hit his red X, Simon came up with a very tactful, and positive solution.
Simon stopped the audition and asked if Daniel had a second song. But Daniel did not have a second song.
Simon said:
“You can’t come on a show like this and say you haven’t got a second song. That’s what live auditions are all about. You have a very good voice, but normally it is about connecting with the right song. I always want people with talent to do well. But just singing that song, that’s not enough.”
He told Daniel that he thought there was a perfect song he could sing, but didn’t think he would know it. Simon then called over someone from the production team to get them to help Daniel to learn the song, but he only had one hour to do it.
Daniel was very thankful to get a second chance on America’s Got Talent after coming slightly unprepared.
Not only did he learn the song in just an hour, he totally nailed it when he got a chance to perform it for the judges.
All four of the judges leaped to their feet by the time he was done and Simon felt that it went to show how ambitious Daniel is.
After all of that, Daniel managed to get a “Yes” vote from all of the judges! He definitely deserved that, don’t you think?
One Facebook user felt that Simon should have used his Golden Buzzer for Daniel:
We thought Simon should have used his golden buzzer since he asked this guy to learn a song he’d never heard in one hour. Not only did he learn it, he knocked it out of the park big time!
While another commenter totally agreed with Simon’s decision:
SIMON WAS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT AGAIN! 1st, there are WAY TO MANY singers (not an unusual talent-boring). 2nd, you always have a second song ready. However, Simon finds a tactful solution.
One commenter already knows who they’re going to root for this season on AGT:
My new favorite. I would have LOVED to see him get a golden buzzer but keep in mind that these audition episodes are edited together from several different cities and it’s possible that all the judges had already used theirs.
What do you think of this audition? Do you think Simon was harsh to make Daniel stop singing?
America’s Got Talent airs on NBC on Tuesdays at 8 P.M., directly followed by World of Dance.
