Traveling is always stressful—but that stress can increase from bad to worse with news of an airport delay.
Delays are common enough, but they’re still one of the most annoying parts of traveling. When you’re exhausted and have been traveling for ages, the last thing you need is to be told you’re going to have to sit and wait for an indeterminate amount of time before continuing on your journey.
In an amusing twist earlier this month, one group of travelers were treated to a jaw-dropping dance performance when they were postponed by a 6-hour airport delay.
The event occurred at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, where the Funkywunks dance group entertained a captive audience during their endless wait. According to reports, the group figured they could brighten up the dull atmosphere and spread some joy to the traveler’s lives.
A fellow passenger recorded the impromptu routine, sharing it on social media where it has since gone viral.
According to their website, the Funkywunks are masters of the hip-hop style of dance, boasting their ‘waacking, popping, breaking’ skills— moves that are on full display in this energetic, airport routine.
In the footage, you see the dancers perform jaw-dropping moves to a remix of ‘Uptown Funk’ by Bruno Mars.
They begin crowded in the center, with steps reminiscent of Michael Jackson’s Thriller routine, before spreading out and bursting into choreographed moves that make their fellow passengers gather ’round.
Most of the routine consists of showcasing each dancer’s moves while the others perform synchronous steps around the “star”.
If the dancers look familiar, you may recognize them from NBC’s World of Dance.
“We really enjoyed World of Dance,” said choreographer Julie Johnson. “It’s based around dancing [whereas] America’s Got Talent is a variety show. We got to meet some of the most incredible dancers.
The Funkywunks performed to pop songs like ‘I’m Sexy and I Know It’ for celebrity judges Jennifer Lopez, Ne-Yo, and Derek Hough before being eliminated during a dance-duel competition. You can see their qualifying performance below:
Although they didn’t win, the dancers haven’t let the loss get them down. In fact, the recent publicity has simply renewed their confidence in the craft.
Since appearing on the show (and having this video go viral), the group has amassed a large online following.
Their Facebook page boasts over 100,000 followers, and comments on the airport video read:
“This was awesome!! I worked at DFW and if this had happened during the time I was there, I would have gone nuts watching them! Great job!!!”
“This was just…wonderful! It’s like being in the NYC subway anytime can be showtime. I’m glad the ppl had a decent distraction!”
“You guys are incredible!!!!!! I’d pay good money to watch this in person and they got it for free!”
