Winning seems to come easy to the dance and cheer squads at Carondelet High School, a Catholic college-prep girls’ school in Concord, CA.

Their 2017 varsity pom team took the National Grand Championship at the JAMZ Nationals in Las Vegas with their performance of “Stop.”

And it was neither their first nor last amazing performance at JAMZ. These young women are used to being winners!

Taking the stage

Background music filled the air as the team gathered themselves for a pep talk before they began. After all, you need to cheer on yourself before you rile up others.

After a few chants to pump themselves up, they’re ready to take the stage, and the background music dies down as they get ready to hear their own tunes.

Nineteen young women line up on stage and lift their heads in confidence to begin their performance.

They’ll be judged on choreography, jumps, kicks, synchronization, and rotations. And they look like they’re ready.

Let the show begin

The music starts pumping as the women dance together, pompoms in hand.

And the audience is into it!

Their rotations are performed in perfect unison – which is impressive considering the number of women on stage!

But to keep things interesting, they try out different formations, always with symmetry in mind.

And what would a high school cheer or dance performance be without ensuring they can lead the audience in “the wave”?

We have no doubt they can rile up a crowd at sporting events!

A championship performance

They won the competition that year and have kept winning ever since.

In 2019, Carondelet Dance took three first-place finishes in the JAMZ School and All-Star Dance and Cheer Nationals in Las Vegas in Varsity Jazz, Varsity Pom, and Dance Style (Jazz), the last for which they were dubbed the Overall Grand Champions.

In other words, they’ve only improved since their stellar 2017 performance!

The team found out they qualified for the 2017 JAMZ competition after excelling at regionals in 2016.

The school posted a special message for the team after they won that year:

“Congratulations to our varsity dance team, which earned Grand Championship marks at the JAMZ Regional Competition, posting a score of 92.53! Carondelet also won the best choreography award. With their victory at the Battle at the Capitol in Sacramento, the team has now qualified for the 2017 JAMZ School Nationals. Congratulations, Cougars!”

They certainly took that momentum and ran with it!

These young women really know how to work as a team and get their groove on.

And it takes a lot of practice to maintain such symmetry during a performance. One wrong step by just one dancer and the illusion is ruined.

Luckily, they never had that problem.

As they ended on a high note, the audience cheered and the room was full of energy.

Even after all that, the dancers hardly seemed tired. They cheered and bounced off the stage, thrilled by their excellent performance.

No doubt they could feel a win coming.
