For Sam, dancing isn’t simply a hobby he took up out of boredom. In fact, he isn’t new to dancing at all.

He began learning how to dance when he was only nine years old, right after his mom showed interest in the art.

As a junior shagger, he actually bagged two junior national titles with his dance partner, Terri Alerty. Then he won more over the years, dancing with different partners including his sister, Sarah. Some of the titles Sam has under his belt include the seven-time champion of the Carolina Shag Division in the USA Grand National Dance Championships, three-time US Open Shap Champion, and even “Entertainer of the Weekend” at the Grand Nationals.

Dancing was also how Sam met his wife, Lisa.

It was back in 1998 at the USA Grand Nationals in Atlanta when the two shared the practice floor before the competition. Sam playfully recounts how Lisa chased him, while she shoots back saying he wasn’t that hard to catch himself. Their love for dancing includes promoting shag dance throughout the country and holding workshops in France, Spain, England, the Netherlands, and even on cruise ships. The pair have won countless titles and even have a national TV commercial together!

“Sam West is arguably the best shagger out there today. His smoothness and articulations on the dance floor are the best I have ever seen. I truly enjoyed this routine and interpretation of Stand by Me, just a wonderful exhibition of pure talent and joy.”
