Over the years wedding traditions have changed and new traditions have started to take place. There is no one “one size fits all” when it comes to planning your wedding anymore. Yet, while many couples are creating their own version of the wedding of their dreams they still keep old traditions in, with a twist.
This includes the classic tradition of the father/daughter dance at the wedding reception.
The father/daughter wedding dance origin stems from the days when a father would create a dowry for his daughter husband. A wedding historian, Susan Waggoner, explains that,
“the father/daughter dance came before the first dance as an extension of the ‘giving away’ as well as the dowry—the father would demand a final dance before giving their daughters to their new man.”
The tradition of a dowry and the father being fully in charge of his daughter’s decision has completely gone by the wayside, but the dance has stayed. The significance of the bond between daughters and their dads is displayed through this dance.
“It is just one last time for all you daddy’s girls to dance the night away with your old man,” one wedding blog stated.
While the father/daughter dance has stayed in modern wedding, even as other wedding traditions have faded away, many fathers and daughters choose to shake up the old tradition. This father and daughter gave the old tradition a twist and decided to let loose. Their dance starts off as most do with a classic father/daughter dance song.
The father meets his daughter on the dance floor and they sway to “My Girl” by The Temptations.
From the very beginning viewers can see that this father and daughter have fun together. He is singing along to every word as he spins his daughter on the dance floor. The very first moment that The Temptations sing the words “My Girl” the father is a bit away from his daughter, so he can point to his girl with the song.
That is when their dance takes a turn because their song, being played by a DJ, skips and ends abruptly.
The wedding guests let out an audible “no” because they believe the moment is about to be ruined, but it is only beginning. This father and daughter duo quickly break out their dance moves when Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” starts to play instead.
These two had a dance surprise up their sleeves and they are ready to get down.
If the guests, and viewers watching online, thought Taylor Swift was going to be their only dance break down song choice, they would be wrong.
This father and daughter are about to perform a dance medley.
This father and daughter add in four more songs to their dance medley that ranges from country, disco, pop and hip-hop. They want to show off their range and how much fun these two can have. What an amazing moment to share with her father, to go and dance alongside him, they must have had so much fun while she was growing up.
The father and daughter are laughing and smiling throughout their entire dance medley. This is a memory they will always remember.
Then, as if nothing had happened, “My Girl” starts to play again and the father and daughter resume their original dance. The dance ends and the father and daughter bow for their wonderful performance they just gave. The two have the biggest smiles on their faces as the crowd roars.
