Talent shows like The X Factor always treat us to some of the best singers that the world has to offer.
Olly Murs and James Arthur are just a few stars who got their start on X Factor.
This dad here is about to take his first steps into the bigger world of performing, and he’s doing it for his son.
Meet Jeff Gutt, a father and small-time singer from Michigan. Jeff’s then-4-year-old son was there for this X Factor audition.
He happily told the judges about his son and why he was there.
Simon, Demi, and Britney were all anxious to see what Jeff had in store for them.
They wouldn’t be disappointed, as you’ll see.
Jeff wanted a song that’d really let him showcase his vocal talent. That song would be Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah.
Hallelujah has been covered numerous times, but it’s easy to see why.
Cohen knew what he was doing when he wrote the scales for this song.
The opening verse requires good breath support and tone already, and the chorus ramps up slowly.
So it’s a real test of a singer’s fundamentals.
And Jeff absolutely knows his singing fundamentals.
“Oh, he wants to sing Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah? Let’s hear it then.”
So Jeff gives them a taste of his voice, and the crowd’s a fan of it already.
Jeff’s voice is unique.
His tone is clear, but his voice has that raspy, grovel sound to it.
The type you hear from seasoned rock singers.
The reason for this is that Jeff had sung in local rock bands before.
Years before he was a father, Jeff was also tearing up the mic with his bandmates from his youth.
Jeff delivers on here, and he shows no signs of slowing down.
He’s got the raspy rock voice and he may as well show it off.
He gives the crowd what they want: a nice old rock belt from the top of his lungs, and he hits the note perfectly.
Jeff came to impress the crowd and his son, and he nailed the goal in no time.
His 4-year-old had never heard him sing before, so this must be one heck of an occasion to see his daddy singing for the first time.
I wonder if he started asking his dad to sing to him more when they went home that day?
The crowd wouldn’t stop applauding, and Britney couldn’t help but shed a tear.
Jeff had stolen the show that night, and it got him noticed.
After blowing the crowd away at X Factor, Jeff signed a contract to become the lead singer of the band Stone Temple Pilots.
And it all started with a performance he did for his son.
Stone Temple Pilots has been around since 1989, and Jeff had the honor of filling in the shoes of some great past singers.
He certainly deserved it.
