While we generally associate line dancing with the American Midwest, it is a form of dancing that has global roots.

The very first line dances did not originate from the country-western scene we are familiar with today. In fact, folk-dancing traditions are believed to be the birthplace of this easy-breezy get-down. Contra dancing, a form of American folk dance, shares many similarities and influences. Today, line dancing has evolved into a celebratory and expressive act most commonly associated with cowboy hats, spurred boots and country music.

In the video, a trio of men dance their way out onto a tropical patio while the notes of a familiar ’90s country hit begin to ring out into the air.

With a wag of their fingers, they beckon us to pick up just what they’re throwing down!

“It’s A Little Too Late”, the 1996 hit from Mark Chestnutt accompanies their energetic display.

The song is classic and catchy, perfectly suited for this type of dance. The lyrics ring out to an upbeat tempo:

“Oh, I should’a done this and I should’a done that
I should’a been there, then she’d a never left
I should’a been hangin’ on every word she ever had to say
It’s a little too late, she’s a little too gone
She’s a little too right, I’m a little too wrong
Now would be the time to change but it’s a little too late.”

But with dance moves like these, she might be coming back!

The trio displays amazing synchronicity, jiving back and forth on long legs, tapping their boots and jumping in line.

Their act is something to behold as they work to redefine western dancing in front of our eyes. It’s truly line dancing meets freestyle!

Oliveira is no stranger to sharing his high-voltage country moves with the community.
