The history of line dancing is as rich and varied as the dance itself.

The first known line dance instructions were written in a book of dance sheets in 1650 for English Country Dancing.

It’s believed that country line dancing as we know it today evolved from these English Country Dances or Contra dances, brought to the United States by settlers who carried their dance traditions with them.

Today, there are numerous choreographed country line dances, each with its unique name and steps.

From the “Tush Push” and “Cowboy Cha Cha” to the “Swamp Thing” and “Cotton-Eyed Joe,” these dances add a fun and lively twist to any gathering.

There are also non-country line dances like the “Macarena,” “Cupid Shuffle,” and “Chicken Dance.”

Some dancers even create and trademark their own country line dances, like David Villellas’s “Holy Moly.”

David Villellas, according to Copper Knob, has choreographed or co-choreographed about 25 dances.

His performance of the “Holy Moly” in Sauzé-Vaussais, France, was posted on YouTube and has been viewed more than 500,000 times.

The performance was danced to the song “Footloose,” originally written and performed by Kenny Loggins in 1984 for the film of the same name.

However, Villellas choreographed his dance to Blake Shelton’s version of the song.

The performance begins with Villellas’s crew standing in their lines, all dressed in denim jeans, flannel shirts or t-shirts, and white cowboy hats.

As the music starts, they begin clapping, setting the stage for the fancy footwork to come.

With a stomp of the foot and a spin, they launch into the dance, their energy palpable.

The dancers slide to the right, twist their feet back and forth, and hop around in a circle, all in perfect unison.

They step around, their cowboy boots hitting the floor in rhythm with the music.

The sight of these country guys and gals moving together as one is a testament to the power of line dancing in creating a sense of unity and camaraderie.

The dancers spin around on one foot, then the other, tipping their cowboy hats to the audience in a playful gesture.

They shuffle around in line to the left and right, their movements perfectly timed to the music.

The dancers move as a single unit, their individual steps blending seamlessly into a coordinated dance routine.

The pace of the dance slows down momentarily as the dancers move forward and back.

But the tempo soon picks up again, with intermittent stomps and spins adding a dynamic element to the dance.

Despite the intricate steps, the dancers’ faces are filled with concentration and joy, a testament to the fun and excitement of line dancing.
