Age, indeed, is just but a number.
There are times when we think our physical capabilities dwindle as years leave their marks but every now and then, we find strength through sheer passion, especially toward things we do best.
Two men glide over the ice like they’ve been doing it for years.
With each other’s arms over each other’s shoulders, the two men shared smiles and laughter.
Then, one of them, Scott Hamilton, introduced the man in a blue rodeo costume.
He wasn’t just any “cowboy,” however.
For fans of figure skating, especially during the 90s, this man is all too familiar.
He is a superstar in his own right and one of the leading names in the sport.
He is Kurt Browning, a Canadian figure skater, choreographer, and commentator.
He is a four-time world champion and he is set to prove that age is just a number.
Hamilton introduced him by saying “This is to dispel any rumors that we are different men.”
And prove everyone wrong, he did.
Browning puts his cowboy hat on and cues on the lights.
He started strong with a seamless glide and an effortless aerial spin.
His choreography is clean and graceful.
You can hear the members of the audience cheer for every maneuver, even shouting over the song “Lynda” by Steve Wariner.
Browning’s post-retirement performance is part of a fundraiser event.
Scott Hamilton organized the event Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer.
It’s a nationwide fundraiser in partnership with US Figure Skating and various clubs and rinks around North America.
Donations gained from Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer are used to fund cancer research and to help various facilities with the same goals.
Since 2014, the organization has raised funds for 32 cancer non-profits, from research to support services.
To help bolster the initiative, the organization invited Browning.
Browning is the perfect man for the job as he is, undoubtedly, a skating icon.
Besides winning the World Championships more than once, he also holds the record of landing the first quadruple jump.
He is known for his intricate but fast and light-footed maneuvers, as seen in his most recent performance with Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer.
He also appeared as a regular color commentator for CBC since 1994.
Since then, he also hosted several skating shows like Skating with Celebrities and Battle of the Blades.
People all over the internet can’t believe how well Browning skates despite the years.
“Just so people know, Kurt is 57 and still skating at such a high level.” One commenter said, “If no one mentioned who it was, I would say it was a guy in his 30s out there. Just awesome!”
“I never got to meet Kurt but I skated at the world-famous Broadmoor World Arena in the 70s with Scott Hamilton when he was a young boy. Both men are extremely impressive,” shared one.
His performance proves that when it comes to what we love, time becomes irrelevant., especially when that passion is channeled to a cause that is worthy of everyone’s support.
Watch how this 57-year old world-champion skater wowed the audience with a jaw-dropping performance.
