Duo dancing brings out the best in both partners, but what people didn’t expect is the best wildcard step this couple pulled out.

As partners, dancers should be able to read each other’s energy, responses, and style.

What one can improvise, the other should be able to respond to. It’s a push-pull dynamic anchored in mutual trust and respect. This way, they can communicate their art to their audience in one cohesive entity that embodies grace and elegance.

Veteran swing dancers Maxime and Torry Zzaoui is no stranger to this kind of dance relationship.

They have established their careers in the West Coast Swing community and became one of their top duos.

Maxime Zzaoui started dancing at the very young age of 5 in Lyon, France. He was trained in the contemporary style at the Conservatory for 6 years before breakthrough new horizons in West Coast Swing.

He proved himself to be a talented and skilled dancer when he became the first European to land a spot in the top 5 of the classic division at the US Open 2012.

Meanwhile, Torri Smith, as the host called her, began dancing in California when she was 3 years old. While she’s exposed to other kinds of dance like jazz and tap dancing, she has always found home in West Coast Swing.

She has won the Young America/Young Adult divisions a total of six times at the US Open.

It clinched her place as one of the community’s top dancers.

According to their website, Torri and Maxime became more than just dance partners when her surname Smith was struck out and was replaced with Zzaoui.

And this level of chemistry was undeniable in the video uploaded by the West Coast Swing on YouTube just last May. The video is continuously racking up views and likes not only because of their skillful and artistic movement but because this couple can pull off hilariously unexpected moves.

Their routine started with simple head bobbing to “Woman” by Elderbrook.

The audience watched how the two opened their number with fluid body waves, not expecting anything out of the ordinary.

As veterans of the dance community and a real-life couple, both of them have learned to read and respond to each other. Maxime leads this dance and Torri lets herself be taken through the motions. They spun across the dance floor and gracefully glided their feet when they move.

But as soon as the song drops, Maxime lets go of Torri then falls on the floor in a pushup position. The crowd bursts out laughing at the improvised move and even Torry was a bit surprised. One of the audience members even stood up when he can’t keep his reaction anymore.

Whether he’s unable to get up or refuses to, his partner Torri extends her arms towards him to pull him up.

After some good laughs and hearty cheers, the couple returned to their usual finesse and finished the routine. They moved in such seamless cohesion of artistic movements, showing everyone that we can all create “poetry in motion”, while still having fun in between, of course.
