For the families of a newly-married couple, the first dance is enough to bring out the tears. But for the rest of the guests, watching a couple you barely know slowly swaying across the dance floor is kind of – dare we say it? – boring.
Of course, it’s not a newlywed couple’s job to keep their guests entertained – it’s their special day that’s being celebrated after all.
But it’s still a lot of fun when a couple decides to put a unique spin on their first dance and make it something unforgettable.
That’s exactly what married couple Noah and PJ did at their own wedding dance, when they went from one-note mutual swaying to putting on a full-on show for their audience, set to a mash-up of some of the best tunes invented.
The video of the dance begins with the couple doing the typical wedding dance thing, holding one another and keeping things relatively understated.
But that all changes when the music suddenly switches to something more upbeat. No more “It’s A Quiet Thing” by Morganna King – instead, “Conga” by Miami Sound Machine blasts through the speakers.
Noah and PJ do a good bit of acting, pretending to shout at the DJ for what seems out of his control. But as the music kicks in, the pair shimmy to the crowd, warming them up, before jumping straight into an impressive salsa routine.
Something tells us this couple have a professional dance background – either that, or they pick things up really fast! They’re quick to hit every move, spinning, sliding and rock-stepping to the beat.
Then, as quickly as the song starts, it ends – and “Gonna Make You Sweat” by C+C Music Factory kicks in.
The couple whip off their jackets and embrace the R&B tune with a slightly corny street routine, complete with a floss and plenty of “dad dance” moves.
The crowd are loving it, cheering and laughing along to their every move – but there’s time for yet another vibe as the couple move their hands to frame their faces in the signature Madonna “Vogue” poses.
“Vogue” turns out to be an interval for their next song, classic disco tune “Get Down Tonight” by KC and The Sunshine Band.
The couple turn up their collars and pull off some synchronized disco-dancing, complete with the “Night Fever” finger-points that we all know so well.
Just as the novelty of the dance begins to wear off, the couple are at it with another tune, this one “Puttin’ On The Ritz” from “Young Frankenstein – the Musical”. They grab an old fashioned white-topped dancing canes and embark on a dance that transports the room back to the 50s.
Many pointed toes, elegant spins and cane taps later, the couple hold up their hands and the crowd erupts in a cheer, thinking the dance is over… but of course, they’ve saved the best until last.
The opening notes of “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life” by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes begin to play, and there’s a moment of anticipation – are they going to do the infamous “Dirty Dancing” dance?
Of course they are! Noah and PJ join together for the most comically accurate rendition of the dance we’ve ever seen. They even pull off the incredible lift that Baby struggled so much to perfect in the movie.
This is hands-down the best first dance we’ve ever seen! There’s no “trying to dance” here – the pair know exactly what they’re doing, and pull it off with just the right combination of skill and sass.
