Very few things come close to the infectious power of dance.
The seamless, yet calculated movements of dancers evoke power emotions deep in the viewer and encapsulate moments of grace and beauty in each purposeful step.
It’s a ceremonious ritual that highlights the awesomeness of the human body and the grand desire of the human soul to break free. That’s why it was no surprise when dance duo Laszlo Tarkanyi and Stefanie Tschom teamed up to for a dance performance of the ages.
Laszlo, born and raised in Budapest, Hungary, is a male West Coast Swing instructor who enjoys dancing as much as he can. On the other hand, Stefanie Tschom hails from Austria and has been passionate about dancing since a very young age.
The two came together to perform at the 2019-2020 SwingVester competition in Vienna, Austria.
Before their big performance, they were asked by the DJ how they were feeling. Their response, “adventurous”, was then followed by a “how adventurous from 1-10?”.
The DJ was not shy in hyping the levels to 10 and after it was settled, the Master of Ceremony sarcastically tells the couple, “Let’s go 10, and I’m just going to say we’ll pray for you.”
Well, it looks like the board has been set and the pieces ready to move. As the smooth, bellowing horns of a strange track filled the room, the couple took their positions across from each other and held hands as if affirming their readiness. Out of nowhere, the DJ threw what seemed like a curveball.
Suddenly, the entire rhythm switched in an instant and a very memorable tune invites its way back from childhood nostalgia. Yep, you guessed it: the track is titled, “The Bare Necessities” from Disney’s, “The Jungle Book”. Immediately, the couple reassessed their plan of action and adjusted quickly to the upbeat tempo of the track.
The couple absolutely crushed their performance! Every move was a give and take; a perfect balance of both dancers showing their exquisite skills. Lazlo took the lead carefully and was phenomenal with reciprocating his enthusiasm, while Stefanie was a highlight in herself with her jaw-dropping footwork and fantastic spinning.
The audience couldn’t contain their smiles and appreciation for the incredible performance. Not one of the participants ever tried to bite more than they could chew, and that very well could be why Lazlo and Stefanie displayed such exceptional chemistry.
At the conclusion of their show, the crowd erupted out of their seats with massive chanting and applauses that boomed in every corner of the room.
Smiles and laughter could clearly describe the mood of the environment as the dancers really left it all on the dancefloor. The two concluded their magical dance session with one last poetic spin and a tender hug of appreciation. You can tell the two were overwhelmed with joy and satisfaction as they finally were able to accomplish performing at a high level. And would you believe it, they won 1st place in the competition!
Letting go of any inhibition and being okay with letting it all out is one of the first steps of becoming a dancer. Even if you can’t be the next Michael Jackson or Usher, the fact that you mustered the courage to express yourself and your body in that way means you’ve taken the first step. Let these two serve as a beautiful reminder that there’s a dancer inside all of us waiting to swing to the rhythm of the jungle.
