For those of you who love a good country classic, you’ve probably heard the song Tennessee Whiskey. George Strait and Linda Hargrove who co-wrote the song, came up with this hit back in the early 1980s.
Considered a “classic country drinking song,” the words describe how a man’s partner saved him from abusing alcohol. The words “as smooth as Tennessee Whiskey” and “as sweet as strawberry wine” emphasize that point.
A new twist
Although the song has been around a long time, in 2015, Justin Timberlake alongside Chris Stapleton performed a different rendition at the CMA awards. Soon afterward, Tennessee Whiskey skyrocketed to the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
Yet another change
But recently, a couple decided to put an entirely different spin on the song by making it soulful. Sitting in a simple living room with a keyboard and an electric guitar, Farrah Camu and Johnny Martian created magic with their version of Tennessee Whiskey.
Keeping it slow
Just as the original song, these two keep the tempo of the song slow. But right from the start, you can tell it has a different sound. Yes, the song is easily recognized but as stated, soulful.
An incredible voice
From the second Farrah begins to perform, you can’t help but notice what a beautiful voice she has. With her eyes closed, she softly sings the words, “Used to spend my nights out in a barroom. Liquor was the only love I’ve known.”
Feeling the emotion
The difference between a good and great vocalist is that someone with genuine talent sings from the heart. The words come from a place filled with emotion. You can hear it in Farrah’s voice as she continues, “But you rescued me from reachin’ for the bottom. And brought me back from being too far gone.
Soulful and sultry
Tennessee Whiskey might’ve started as a country song but with this version, it has a sensual flavor. Listening to this rendition, you can envision two people in love embracing on a quiet dance floor while swaying back and forth to the sound of the music.
Love the runs
Another way to spot a gifted artist is they don’t exaggerate runs. As Farrah sings the part “sweet as strawberry wine,” she adds just the right amount. Her voice flows beautifully as she goes from verse to verse.
Johnny deserves credit too
Although Farrah is the one who lends her voice to this version of Tennessee Whiskey, Johnny performs flawlessly on the keyboard. He too has real talent that combined with the guitar is mesmerizing.
A wisp to her voice
When Farrah sings, “Used to look for love in all the same old places,” you can hear a wisp to her voice that makes the song all the more soulful. Why this woman hasn’t been signed to a big record deal is beyond me.
Gone viral
Even with the talent of these two, the video has only been viewed 54,000 times. Yes, that’s enough to give it viral classification but as good as it is, it deserves far more coverage. Especially for people who love the Tennessee Whiskey song, this version is a joy to listen to.
But here’s the great part. You can watch it simply by clicking on the video below. We feel strongly that you’ll agree this is a masterpiece.
