Line dancing is a style of country -western dance, long associated with the southern states of America. It evokes images of saloon doors, cowboy boots and yippee-ki-yay. Line dancing however has grown up with the times, and as with other styles of music that have travelled with us to the 21st century, it had developed along with the era.

Line dancing isn’t still all dusty sepia cowboy scenes.

In fact, it’s got a lot more glitz and glam nowadays!

Jean-François Léonard, a Dj and videographer from Quebec, uploaded this video of a group of gals strutting their stuff to a rocking variety of country dance classics. They’ve got style, skill and a sweet new twist on a well established style of dance.

They begin in…you guessed it…a line!

Well you have to make the dance live up to the name! After they break out from their line formation, they move into another typical formation for country-western style dance. But just because the formation is typical, doesn’t mean that it’s boring. Their moves are well timed, deliberate and well executed.

And what’s a line dance without a little hat play?

A cowboy ain’t a goodly gentleman ‘less he tip his hat! Although these are more “cowgirls”, they sure do tip their hats with style. The whole group has a relaxed confidence in their dance and they are all naturals of the style. Of course, the final ingredient for a line dance -the smile- is added in generously.

And all the signifiers of a good line dance are there too.

Taking the costuming for grated, the checked shirts, denim jeans and cowboy hats, the girls keep a traditional stance, with their thumbs in their belts. One commenter even asked if their pants keep falling down as it seems like they’re attempting to keep them hoisted throughout the dance.

Borrowing from other dance genres, these dancers shake up the style!

At one point in the routine, they include a sort of sound effect breakdown. This is common in modern dance performances, particularly of the hip-hop genre, where the music stops and sound effects such as gun shots and punching sounds offer a fun break between music tracks.

And the music is a country style delight.

With poppy covers of John Denver’s “Thank God I’m A Country Boy”, and “Take Me Home, Country Road” and a handful of other country dance classics, these girls breath a lungful of new life into a well trodden dance genre.
