What’s your favorite genre of music?
If you listen to Top 40 radio, chances are you’re hearing a lot of pop music, maybe some rap and R&B. For those who like a little more energy in their music, they might be more interested in rock or metal.
No matter what you like, every genre of music has its own dance style associated with it—and the internet is a great place to find videos of these performances. Still, even if hip-hop choreography and swing dancing are most prevalent on YouTube, there’s still another genre out there with some impressive performances.
That genre is country dancing!
Although country music is most popular with people who live in the country (typically), it remains a huge genre in music today.
As such, it has a dedicated fanbase—and a dedicated set of dancers who like to perform to country songs as well.
Although country dancing is considerably different than dancing to pop or R&B, it’s also pretty different from swing dancing (even if there are more similarities there). The end result is a flowing, smooth with dips, spins and all kinds of other flourishes.
And to see just how great it can be, we have a perfect video to demonstrate.
The clip we’re talking about was loaded in April 2013.
It was originally loaded online by Donny Robbins, a country dancing choreographer with plenty of other videos online as well. In this one, it begins with Robbins behind a bar cleaning a glass as a woman approaches him.
She calls him to the dance floor and before long, the two of them are paired together in the middle of the empty bar. From the very beginning, Robbins spins his partner multiple times in rapid succession.
To add to the performance, he spins around again and again as well.
Still, things get more impressive as the video goes on.
Before long, Robbins is leading the dance through more and more spins that are more and more complicated. After that, it’s time to hit a few dramatic dips.
Next, he’s tossing his partner up in the air, side-to-side and all around himself. The entire time, both dancers move in perfect harmony with one another, never missing a step and tossing each other all over the dance floor!
Although it has some of the same flavors of swing dancing, there’s something a lot more fun about it.
Although swing dance is very high energy, this performance seems a lot looser and more casual.
Even so, it still has just as many fast moves, difficult tosses and turns and plenty of intricate choreography. When it’s all over, the two keep spinning each other back and forth as the video fades out.
Since the clip was posted, it has been viewed nearly two million times on YouTube—but it’s clear that Robbins’ choreography deserves a lot more attention! In a time when fewer and fewer people know how to do ballroom or formal dances, seeing people put together intricate and beautiful performances like this one never gets old.
Special thanks to Donny Robbins on his awesome choreography and country dancing! Be sure to watch the entire performance in the video below:
