When it comes to singing, how low can you go?

For those of us who are not familiar with the musical note system, the bass is the deepest point of a man’s voice. And according to the experts in this field, a true and pure bass voice is very rare. Thus, it explains why there is a rather small repertoire written for it. Only a few people can pull it off. It is suspected that only five percent of all men who can sing bass actually have a true bass voice.

It is because the range and the ability of a person’s voice are innate.

It’s either you are born with it, or you’re not. Even though with proper and rigorous training, a person’s vocal range can be expanded by two notes at the top and the bottom. But the main timbre would still rely on the person’s inborn gift, thus limiting his capabilities in comparison to a natural bass. Also, singing outside your given voice range is not advisable since it can put a strain on your vocal cords and can damage it in the long run.

However, this guy here can strike those deep and low notes effortlessly.

Don’t be fooled by his rugged exterior, jutting chin, and strong jaw. Behind his good looks is an enormous amount of talent that will definitely make you drop your jaw to the floor. He is Geoff Castellucci, a man-made of muscles and an amazing vocal box that makes his avid fans and random listeners swoon over him.

And in one of the videos he uploaded on his official YouTube account, he makes his rendition of “Sixteen Tons”.

“Sixteen Tons” is inspired by the travails of the real-life coal miners of Kentucky and the sad truth about the scrip system.

It is a song written and first sung by Merle Travis. However, Tennessee Ernie Ford did a remake and it became his signature song in 1955. Later on, another bass will remake this heavy-hitting classic.

When he starts singing, low notes fill the air that will give you both caress and send shivers down to your spine. Geoff’s voice perfectly captures the resiliency and pride of a man who is caught behind the eight-ball since birth. His rich and deep voice provides a dark ambiance which entails the dire situation the miners are in. Every note he hits and every snap of his finger is the plight and woes of these unfortunate souls trapped in an endless maze of suffering without a ray of hope for them.

The song is well-written and arranged in an absolute class. From the lyrics to the melodies, it is overflowing with character and sentiment that will tug anyone’s heart.

His delivery is smooth like honey and truly heartfelt. The performance itself is aesthetically pleasing with the props and a bit of choreography he carries out using the mallet, pickaxe, and shovel as makeshift instruments.

These subtle nuances just add more quality and a whole new level of poignancy to his already splendid performance.
