Girl sits down at Costco piano and wows shoppers with “Someone Like You”

November 23rd, 2020

It was a normal chilly day in October, lots of people are strolling in the mall, busy buying things off their long list because Christmas is just around the corner.

Although they still have to get through Halloween and Thanksgiving at that. What the customers didn’t know is that they will be treated to a beautiful piano duet by a female shopper and a salesman in a Torrance, California store.

Dubbed Costco Piano Girl on YouTube, the girl in the video is a music therapist in San Diego, Southern California.

She was just meandering her way in the store when she heard Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly” being played through a piano in the background.

That’s when she crossed paths with Justin Romanowich, a Yamaha salesman—and on a whim, they decided to jam away on Adele’s “Someone Like You.”

Justin chose the key and her boyfriend recorded the performance. Both of them immediately clicked and started to play in a duet.

Despite having just met, the duo displayed great chemistry on the piano—their movements are in sync, and they complement each other perfectly.

Justin played the harmony, while the Costco girl takes the melody.

At the start of the performance, many people were already amazed with their jaws slightly ajar, as they gaze in astonishment.

Two little girls donning purple shirts couldn’t even stop themselves from staring, not believing their eyes as they watched these two talented people showcasing their skills.

Although some extra notes can be heard in the video, although not initially intended, they were left unperturbed in their performance.

For them, those just added flavor and uniqueness to the whole experience.

The sad vibe of the song resonated with the duo’s performance, thus earning them a round of applause.

Some of the people who enjoyed the performance were a father with his son.

Situated behind the duo, the father held his son’s hand swaying to the music.

They look so cute together as if they are in Carnegie Hall. Many shoppers also stopped dead on their tracks as they pass by the piano duo, the others followed their sense of hearing to seek out the source of the wonderful tune.

“Someone Like You” is the second single off of Adele’s sophomore album, 21.

The track was inspired by the singer’s now-defunct relationship, serving as a summary of the pain and loss she suffered at that time. The track, which epitomizes someone being down on their knees, actually inspired most of 21‘s tracks. As the closing track of the album, lyrically, it speaks of Adele coming to terms with it.

The song received widespread critical acclaim, to no one’s surprise, with critics choosing the song as the highlight of the album and praised the lyrics, its simplicity of the sound and Adele’s vocal performance.

The song is so famously sob-inducing, credit to its uncanny power to elicit tears and chills from listeners.
