A group of performance contortionist made waves this past May after being booted from Britain’s Got Talent— in spite of their mind-blowing performance.

The group is made up of the following four Russian women: 29-year-old Bayarma, 28-year-old Imin, 27-year-old Ayagma, and 20-year-old Serchmaa. They appeared on the May 8th episode of the series, stunning viewers everywhere with their surreal, fluid-like movements and impressive bodily control.

Their performance was completely breathtaking. Although they call themselves contortionists, the entire act is reminiscent of a dance— their limbs pumping synchronously to a pounding, primal beat. They take on seemingly impossible positions, balancing their bodies on top of one another while still moving their bodies to the sound.

In the end, the women received thumbs up from each of the judges, and even the internet was impressed.

Judge David Walliams stated quite bluntly: “That was one of the most stunning things I’ve ever seen on this show.”

Viewers also penned (via Daily Mail UK) comments such as the following:

“Absolutely speechless because of Angara Contortion. They were the best & weirdest performance I’ve ever seen.”

“How did Angara Contortion not get the golden buzzer? They are 1000x times better than the dance act who did the other week.”

“Seriously excited to see what Angara Contortionists do next. I wanna get freaked out again.”

Unfortunately, we never got to see what the group would do next; they were booted from the show as the result of what many would call a scandal.

During their audition, the girls claimed to be from Moscow and had traveled to the UK to audition. They told judge Simon Cowell they “hoped” they could win to land a place on the Royal Variety Performance. It was quickly revealed, however, that the women are actually American residents and star performers from the Cirque de Soleil, having been featured in the show “Kurios”, likely performing 1000s of times worldwide.

The women’s lies (alongside an “impossible” tweet which was later revealed to be written by the show’s PR firm) made viewers question the Britain’s Got Talent‘s legitimacy, even going so far as to say the show is fixed. In an attempt to settle the drama, The Sun UK reports that Cowell ultimately ended up axing Angara Contortion, as well as a few other performers who were also discovered to be established professionals (including singer Sian Pattison, acrobats Gao Lin and Liu Xin, and the Japanese magician TanBa).

In response to the axings, an insider said, “A lot of the acts who are in the semi-finals are genuine performers looking for their first big break rather than ‘Second Chance Charlies'”.

Do you think the performers should have been kicked off the show in spite of their incredible performance below?
