Anyone who’s ever played an instrument knows that it takes hours upon hours of dedication to master. The amount of arpeggios and tedious practice exercises one has to play in order to put on a near perfect performance is almost insane. In fact, I’d argue to say that professional musicians are all a little bit wacko in their own little ways, in the best way possible, of course. You’ve got to tick a bit differently in order to dedicate yourself so wholeheartedly to one single instrument.
When one young man steps on stage to play his violin, the crowd is in for an incredible technical performance. However, this musician has got a little something else up his sleeve.
What if I were to tell you that he doesn’t play anything except for “Pop! Goes The Weasel” for the entirety of this performance?
And no, he is absolutely not a beginner!
When he walks on the stage, you can tell that this guy is quite the character.
What you’re about to witness is a comedy violin act, unlike anything you’ve ever seen.
The amount of skill needed to perform the crazy thing he does is absolutely out of this world. He somehow manages to keep his beautiful tone while threading his arm through his legs, or playing with a backward bow. Lots of people can’t get this kind of sound even when playing normally.
The crowd begins to laugh even before the young violinist even begins to play. Not only is he a wonderful musician, but he’s also quite the master of physical comedy. I’ll bet my bottom dollar that he’s spent plenty of time watching the likes of The Three Stooges, the Marx Brothers, and the Monty Python guys.
Not many people can get up on stage and pull off this type of comedy. As a lot of actors say: drama is easy, comedy is another story! To be able to make a room burst out in laughter as this kid does is a talent to be milked and showcased as often as possible. If he keeps up with this, I’ll bet he’ll go really far!
But when he puts his skill as a musician together with his apt for physical comedy, you get something – if I may – completely different.
I think that’s why the crowd likes it and eats it up so eagerly. They’ve never seen anything quite like it before!
It’s great how he’s able to take something so simple like the uncomplicated melody of “Pop! Goes the Weasel,” and turn it into something so intricate, meticulous, and lighthearted.
As a string player myself, I’m blown away by his ability to play the harmonies like that while also doing so many other things with his body.
While I’d love to see him play a proper concerto and to hear his sheer technical prowess and ability to emote through his music, this is also so, so fun to watch. You can see his personality shine right through, and clearly, the audience loves it, too!
Have you ever seen anything like this before? I certainly haven’t! I honestly don’t know how he does it.
