Are you a musician? How much does it grate you when you come across that one person who can play anything on your instrument of choice after listening to the song ONCE? Well, get ready to get frustrated.
We’re going to see someone who picks it up while they’re playing.
Famed swing piano player, Brendan Kavanagh, posted a video to YouTube of his chance encounter with a young piano player at a shopping mall!
The man is known as Dr. K. Boogie Woogie to his 1.3 million fans on YouTube!
The young lady was playing some classical piano on a public piano when Brendan approached her and began talking piano with her!
The player invites Brendan to come and sit with her to play!
Little does she know that she is going to get the lesson of her lifetime!
Brendan is known for being a fantastic swing piano teacher and player, and his dog Rex is never far behind him!

Swing music is known for it’s upbeat rhythms and fast pace!
With speed comes precision, and neither are easy to achieve for any musician!
But pretty quickly, the young piano player begins to pick it up!
She is only playing with one hand to keep up with Brendan, but her notes are becoming more confident and her speed is matching Dr. K. himself!
It certainly helps that she has come from a classical background, which is difficult enough on its own! It’s often the way that classical piano teachers are also big believers in being self-disciplined, which can foster good drive for playing music and consistently getting better!
The young pianists’ skills really begin to shine the longer she plays!

Brendan certainly doesn’t try to take it easy on her,
as he increases the tempo every few bars!
He’s playing on the left side of the piano, meaning the keys he has access to are in the bassy & mid range of notes! Meanwhile, the young player is on the right side, where her keys are higher in pitch!
This is an important note, because while the higher keys are more noticeable and take more of a “front-man” role, the bass and mid range of an arrangement are essentially the backbone of the music!
Although the young player is playing “lead,” Brendan is still very much the driving force!

If he hit some incorrect notes it would actually be less noticeable than if the young player did so and he is providing the role of the metronome as the bass and rhythm! It gives the sound of the music body and layers while keeping the young lady in time!
So when he increases tempo, the young pianist needs to keep up!
But she holds her own, staying on time and even improvising and playing where she can squeeze it in!
Eventually, she even begins playing with both hands!
Her smile really says it all, she’s having an absolute blast in this duet!
She’s keeping up, improvising and most importantly, she’s impressing Brendan!

When their fun is done and the song is finished, Brendan shakes her hand and offers some praise!
