Along with the holidays comes a change in radio programming to pave the way for Christmas music.
Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, there’s probably a good chance that you’re familiar with all the most popular carols that are out there. Some classic ones include “Jingle Bells,” “Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.” Because these songs are so popular, they can also get just a little bit overplayed.
It’s that same musical saturation that a cappella group Straight No Chaser decided to parody in a recent performance.
For those who don’t know, Straight No Chaser is a famous a cappella group which started at Indiana University in 1996.
The group actually first became more widely popular as a result of another Christmas-themed recording they did in 1998. The performance is viewable on YouTube in a video titled “The 12 Days of Christmas.” Their performance involved a scrambling of the days’ order as well as references to other songs.
In a similar spirit, they’re back with “The Christmas Can-Can,” which pays homage while making fun of the holiday season.
The song begins in a familiar classical style—though it adds its own unique lyrics.
The main vocalist begins by talking about how the Christmas season brings with it all the songs we love to hear—but also “shopping, shopping, shopping, shopping.” Working in snippets of other popular Christmas carols, the group bemoans how “Christmas season” starts as early as October, how the holiday sometimes leaves Jewish people culturally out in the cold and much, much more.
Since it was posted, the performance has amassed some nine million views on YouTube—and it’s not hard to see why!
Although we all love the holidays, there’s no denying that they bring a lot of stressors with them as well.
It’s great to see our families and eat a lot of food and get presents, but there’s also a lot of chaos and emotional work that goes into making the holidays great. By paying tribute to all the things we love while acknowledging the inevitable pressure that season brings, Straight not Chaser score yet another viral hit.
For anyone that was a fan of this video, Straight no Chaser has plenty of additional material as well!
The group has recorded six albums of music and has many additional songs posted on their YouTube channel. For more irreverent humor—along with great vocal performances—be sure to check those out as well!
