Almost anything can be used as a percussion instrument.
Still, have you ever heard about spoons as an efficient percussion instrument? Though we usually use them to eat, some creative musicians have found more interesting uses for them. As it turns out, many folk musicians like to use them as instruments in a live setting—and spoon playing has actually been around for quite a long time. According to Abby the Spoon Lady, a famous spoon player in the US, spoon players have already existed way before written history.
So, how do you play spoons?
There are several techniques used to make spoons as an efficient instrument but the most similar technique is to hold two spoons separated with your thumb with the concave parts facing each other, and play them similar to castanets.
As a spoon player herself, Abby has been keeping the long-running tradition running for more generations.

Abby Roach, also famously known as The Spoon Lady, started performing on the streets with her spoons for the sake of making a little money and traveling across the United States.
In her travels around Asheville, she met and performed alongside other buskers and developed a community called the Asheville Buskers Collective. One of the musicians she met was a Christian musician named Chris Rodriguez.

Both of them performed an original called “Angels in Heaven,” and the results are definitely pretty amazing!

“Angels in Heaven” is Rodriguez’s original composition that was released in 2017 featuring Abby the Spoon Lady. The music video was filmed on Abby’s front porch with only a few instruments in the set. Abby sat on her chair with her trusty spoon instruments, while sitting beside her was Rodriguez with his guitar.

Rodriguez played three instruments at the same time as he sang perfectly with his vivid, angelic voice.
He used his left foot to stomp on the cajon and tapped his right foot on the ground as well. At the same time, he had disk-shaped jingles wrapped around his foot like a tambourine all while playing guitar and singing the lyrics of the song.

As impressive as Rodriguez was, The Spoon Lady added a lot of the performance as well.
With her spoons clacking away, she provided some perfect accompanying percussion and she never missed a beat. It was satisfying to hear Abby’s spoons clip-clopping away along with her contagious enthusiasm. In all, the whole thing makes you want to focus on the sound of the spoons.

The music video was uploaded on Abby the Spoon Lady’s channel on YouTube, and it has since earned her more than 34 million views.

There is no reason for people not to love the video!
The song lyrics are full of overflowing positivity and serenity, and their skillful display as musicians is absolutely contagious. In hard times, their great energy is something that the world needs more of right now! Congratulations to these two on this awesome performance!
If you watch it once, you’re sure to want to watch it again and again. For our part, we’ll never look at spoons the same way again!
