Everyone knows that Amazing Grace is one of the most popular hymns covered by musicians all over the world. Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, and Willie Nelson are just a few of the most popular versions of the hymn. This is a beautiful Gospel song that is near and dear to a lot of people’s hearts.
One version of the song by Christian artist Chris Tomlin has spread in popularity and a lot of new artists cover the version that he sang instead of the original hymn. One of those groups that sang his version of it was Bringham Young University.
The group is called BYU Noteworthy and they have a YouTube channel filled with music and covers of some of the world’s favorite and most popular songs. The one thing that sets them apart- it’s all a cappella. It consists of 9 collegiate female members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
This one video of Amazing Grace has gained over 50 million views, and once you start watching, it’s clear why.
The video starts out with one of the students singing the opening verses set against a beautiful forest back drop. For a moment, we think that may be all there is to the music video, but her voice is incredible.
Not long into the performance, we hear other voices, but don’t see them. She continues to sing beautifully, when as she reaches a stream, a group of back up singers appear behind her filling in the gaps.
There is so much sound added to the single voice that you forget this is an a cappella group. With the bass, the beat boxing, and the diversity of voices, it practically sounds like they have an orchestra playing the song, and not just 9 BYU students.
As they move into the chorus the song builds and gets even better. Their voices blend together perfectly to create the perfect sound needed for this song. Their performance is truly incredible from start to finish.
Since it was posted, the video has gained over 56 million views total. Everyone in the comments not only praises the beauty of these girls and their voices, but have created a community where they share prayers, stories, more in the thread of comments. It just shows that even in dark times or whether your unsure of the future, prayer and music can bring people together.
