Over the years on shows like America’s Got Talent, there have been plenty of contestants who were quite young.
Although we tend to think of these large-scale reality competition shows as only for adults, the truth is that there are plenty of young people throughout the world who are just as talented.
The real truth is that anybody who discovers a passion or a talent early and pursues it with vigor can quickly find themselves on the world stage… assuming the make the right choices along the way.
And this performance from America’s Got Talent showed that all too clearly.
The performer in question is the 13-year-old Charlotte Summers from Marbella, Spain.
As she explains to the cast and crew, she’s been passionate about music for a long time and even started singing when she was just five years old.
From the very outset, Summers says she and her sister always watched America’s Got Talent and dreamt she might be on it one day. To add to her nerves, Summers says that she loves judge Simon Cowell more than anybody in the world.
At this, Cowell gives her a huge grin.
After the introductions are over, everyone clears the way for Summers to perform.
From the beginning, Summers’ hand is shaking because she’s so nervous. A moment later, the music for “I Put a Spell on You” starts playing.
Though the song dates all the way back to 1956 with Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, it has become a standard that’s been covered by the likes of Nina Simone (among others). From the very beginning, Summers voice booms out so confidently and with so much power.
Even though she’s just a teenager, her performance is more than worthy of an adult!
As it continues, her singing only gets stronger and more self-assured.
Though she definitely doesn’t miss any emotional notes, her technical control is also just as good! In one moment, she does an ascending or descending scale with ease. The next moment, she’s soaring through the high register into the low or roaring and growling out the lyrics.
The whole time, she has the audience on the edges of their seats! Although the song she chose is definitely not an easy one to sing, she cruises through it with ease. Aside from the technical difficulty, the emotional and thematic tone of it is definitely adult as well.
Regardless, Summers nails every aspect of it and gets a huge standing ovation at the end!
While we all have a tendency to underestimate those that are younger than us, Summers proves beyond a doubt that we shouldn’t.
Even in a song that discusses adult themes and relationships, Summers proves that having confidence and empathy can bring it to life! Needless to say, the judges were in love with her audition and gave her all the yeses she needed to continue.
Even among all the many young performers we’ve seen on shows like America’s Got Talent, Summers’ confident singing is definitely some of the best we’ve ever seen.
