When it comes to pop music these days, it’s sometimes hard to know exactly what the artists we like are actually doing.
Though there are plenty of talented acts out there, digital effects and touch-ups are more prevalent than ever.
Sometimes we pay for a concert only to discover that our favorite singer actually can’t sing as well as we thought they could—it was all auto-tuned all along. On the other hand, there are still some singers who have so much raw vocal talent that actually gets hidden behind their pop sheen.
Pop singer Charlie Puth is definitely one of those kinds of singers.
For those who don’t know, Puth is an American singer, songwriter, and producer with plenty of hits under his belt.
Though he was born as recently as 1991, he’s since made it onto the charts with songs like “Marvin Gaye,” See You Again,” and “Attention.”
Although all of his songs have a smooth and assured R&B style delivery, Puth keeps a relatively low profile compared to many other artists around his age. Still, he sometimes takes to YouTube to give his fans a peek behind the scenes and to let them in on his creative process.
As it turns out, one of those videos of him goofing around musically has been making the rounds on the internet.

As the video begins, Puth is onscreen with his phone open to an app that measures musical pitches. Though many people might not know this, Puth is something of a musical prodigy and has perfect pitch himself.
As the video begins, he explains that the app on his phone is a program that immediately recognizes the pitch of whatever notes it hears. With that, he starts demonstrating what he can do. He sings a G and the phone registers a G. After that, he does an F-sharp and a slew of other notes.
As it continues he hits all of the notes on the head—and the man behind the camera is in awe.
After that, they go to yet another challenge.
The cameraman says that he’s going to make Puth guess what the first notes of a bunch of famous pop songs are without even hearing them. With that, the game starts. First, the song is “Love Yourself” by Justin Bieber.
Sure enough, Puth hums a note… and it’s the exact right note that the song starts on. After that, the cameraman switches it to “Eastside” by Halsey. This time the note is higher, but once again, Puth gets it perfectly!
As the clip goes on, the two of them start cracking up at how hilarious the whole experience is.
Since the video was uploaded, it has earned some two-and-a-half million views on YouTube!
Even for people who aren’t that familiar with Puth’s music, it’s not hard to see that he has some impressive musical talent. Above all, videos like this one are interesting because they help us to look at our favorite artists in a new way.
Though it’s easy to think everyone’s untalented and aided only by machines, it’s also easy to think our favorite musicians have some kind of secret, special abilities. As it turns out, Puth is just a normal guy with a special gift.
