It’s not uncommon to see older couples have a little fun on dance floors. But to see an older couple with amazing footwork might be.

In the Grand Nationals Masters Division, an elderly couple by the names of Charles Womble and Jackie McGee put on a fantastic display of Shag dancing.

Charlie and Jackie hail from North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

It is only fitting then as the Shag does hail from the beaches of South Carolina. And they danced the night away displaying amazing footwork making Myrtle beach proud.

Originating somewhere in the 1940s, born of the surf and party lifestyle of the day, it is more of a quick and complex dance and not so much a formal one.

A quick hug and a smile and the show is on.

It’s hard to believe they can move with such ease. So much grace and poise and they’ve just begun. The audience already loves it!

No surprises there as they have been dancing together since 1981. Together they’ve won over 300 competitions and even going undefeated for 12 years straight. Talk about dominating.

They spin, glide, and dip so effortlessly. It’s hard to imagine how much practice they’ve had all these years.

One viewer wrote:

“I have watched a lot of couples doing the Shag but this is the best of them all. Their moves are so effortless and smooth. They just glide across the dance floor together and need I add how they complement each other as well.”

She’s not wrong. Charlie and Jackie move so light on their feet it’s incredible to watch.

It’s pretty obvious how these two are enjoying themselves.

Those smiles are genuine and they just know what to do next when they look at each other. The chemistry is all too real and that makes it more fun to watch.

It’s a dance that goes from energetic and fun to intimate and sultry and the fans love it. It’s a dance all their own.

The energy is so infectious and the music is a perfect match for what Charlie and Jackie bring that even some of the audience members can be seen bopping their heads and almost dancing.

It’s no surprise then that they take first place. They seem to have a presence to them that takes command of the dance floor and completely enthralls the audience.

That is almost 40 years of dancing together

The Shag has lived on to be described as:

“A cold beer on a warm night with a hot date and no plans for tomorrow.”

That sounds very Southern. And cool.

The National Shag Dance championship trophy is known as the Charlie and Jackie

Charlie Womble and Jackie McGee are considered ambassadors of the Shag and both are in the Swing Dance hall of fame. Their spirit helps keep the dance alive maintaining it as an important cultural and artistic style.

That’s one lively standing ovation

The video has over 2 million views and counting. And if you are ambassadors then rest assured the younger generation will want to follow in those footsteps.

Very fancy footsteps. They’ll need practice.
