One of the most beloved Christmas songs of all time, aptly (if not imaginatively) named “The Christmas Song” was originally written by a crooner by the name of Mel Tormé, however it is much better known by the first artist to record a rendition: Nat King Cole. Nat King Cole’s rendition is the infamous version we’re all bound to hear whenever we stroll through the supermarket any time within four months of Christmas.
But there is another very memorable rendition!
None other than the one, the only, the queen of Canadian pop singers, drumroll please…
Céline.Dion.
Céline is probably best known for her song “My Heart Will Go On”, written by James Horner and Will Jennings for the film “Titanic”. It’s a classic song by any measure, and has kept Céline popular not just for her own albums.
Where would we be without that song to sing at 2am in a in a karaoke bar huh?
Well I know where Céline Dion would go to sing “The Christmas Song”…
Did somebody say Rockefeller Centre?!
The Rockefeller Center is known for being a Christmas-time hotspot, with people ice skating in the plaza and coming from miles around to admire the massive Christmas tree and lavish decorations. I can’t even look at the above image without hearing the “30 Rock” theme in my head. Maybe I just need more hobbies?
But rather than hanging out in the cold, Céline’s performance is not only in a cozy setting, but a gorgeously decorated one.
For this low-key televised performance, Céline is ravishing and elegant as ever. Look how poised she sits, ready to make any Dionite’s (Céline Dion fans?) Christmas dreams come true. Normally on Christmas day I can be seen wearing my oldest and rattiest clothes.
Chestnuts roasting, on an open fire…
Doesn’t that just set the tone for Christmas entirely? She’s as glamorous as ever, and oh boy does she sound wonderful!
While it is hard to forget Nat King Cole’s rendition, Céline does such a beautiful job of singing The Christmas Song that you just may never want to hear his version again! This truly is a classy event. The kind of event you can imagine attending where they hand you a glass of champagne at the door and the waiters wear tuxedoes and little bowties.
The audience watch on, captivated by Dion’s effortless sophistication.
They cannot take their eyes off this yule-tide diva! I suppose you don’t get a star on both Canada’s AND Hollywood’s walk of fame. That’s one more than most celebrities with stars, and two more than I have!
Don’t you just love her little trills?
Céline does such a great job of making this song her own, it sounds like it could have been written specifically for her. She has such a distinctive voice that there’s always a chance that doing a well known song may not work…
But it does work, and really well!
Well, this may be my new Christmas favorite!
