Though it probably goes without saying, Celine Dion is on the shortlist for the best singers of all time.
For anyone who doesn’t know, Dion was born in Charlemagne, Quebec and began her career as a Canadian teen star. After she learned to speak English, she signed a record deal in the United States and released an English-language pop album called Unison, which was certified Platinum seven times! From there, Dion went on to sing all kinds of power ballads that we recognize today including “My Heart Will Go On” and “All by Myself.”
But until now, she had never been on James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke!
If you haven’t seen any of them before, Corden’s Carpool Karaoke segments have become something of a cultural phenomenon.
In each one, Corden is accompanied by some world-famous pop singer or movie star as he drives around town running errands and singing songs. Although all of these are pretty entertaining, they get even more interesting when it’s a hugely talented artist—or when it’s an artist that is relatively mysterious outside of their body of work.
Fortunately, Dion fits both of these requirements—and the results are hilarious.
As the clip begins, Corden is driving around by himself singing “Viva Las Vegas.”
He makes a phone call and Celine Dion gets in the car! As most people know by now, Dion has been doing Vegas residencies for many years now. Shortly after, Dion takes Corden to the Las Vegas Strip. While they’re driving around, Corden tries to talk to Dion about Vegas—but she keeps interrupting him by doing musical variations on everything he’s saying! She starts dancing around in her chair and Corden can’t stop laughing.
After a few minutes, Corden finally stumps her—and she starts singing “Work” by Rihanna.
After they’re done joking around, Dion and Corden do a duet to her iconic “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now.”
Although Dion’s voice is so incredible, she’s still not done joking around. First, she takes Corden’s face in her hands. After that, she coaches him along. Finally, she kisses him on the mouth! After a moment, Dion sees that passersby are looking in on them. Without missing a beat, she rolls the window down and starts belting at them.
Still, the ride isn’t over yet!
Next up, Corden has a unique challenge for Dion: can she make any song in the world dramatic?
After a few moments, the pair of them decide that they’re going to do a dramatic rendition of “Baby Shark.” Although Dion doesn’t know it right away, Corden sings a little bit of it for her so she can get the gist of it. After just a moment, she starts belting it out and makes good on her promise!
After a little more joking around, they set into another one of Dion’s songs—and she hits her highest notes without even breaking a sweat.
Although there have been plenty of Carpool Karaokes so far, this new one with Celine Dion is setting the internet on fire.
Although everybody knew that Dion was incredibly talented, not everybody knew just how much personality she had as well. Throughout the process, she shows that she can still do all of her best tunes while joking and improvising the whole time. And at the very end, she and Corden even get a boat together and re-enact the ending of Titanic! Few stars are as good as Dion is while still being as goofy and humble.
