More so than many other competition shows, part of The Voice is about strategy.
Although the contestants are competing for the number one spot in the competition, they’re also trying to get as many of the judges’ attention as they can.
Aside from the main competition of the contestants with one another, the judges are also competing to build the best team and ultimately win the competition for themselves. Although most talented contestants can turn at least one or two judges, it’s a much harder challenge to turn everyone around.
Still, some incredible contestants have amazing performances that manage to pull it off.
Just like every performance on the show, it started with all the lights down and the judges’ backs turned.
As the song starts, the singer does some slow jazz scatting that has all the judges making eye contact with each other immediately. After that, she starts into “idontwannabeyouanymore” by Billie Eilish.
Before even seconds have passed, three of the judges smash their buttons to turn around! The three people who turn first are Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine… though John Legend is still holding out.
Needless to say, the singer’s family is beside themselves with excitement!
She keeps performing and the song only gets stronger and stronger.
After just a few more seconds of singing, Legend hits his button to turn around as well—and nobody has been blocked this round!
Because everyone turned around so quickly, there’s still a good amount of song left to sing… and she does it beautifully. When it’s finally over, all the judges get up to give her a standing ovation!
When it’s finally over, she introduces herself as Celia Babini, a 17-year-old singer from New York City.
Because all of the judges have to compete for her, everyone is competing for her attention.
After she introduces herself, all the judges go down the line and give their pitches. For his part, Legend says that her voice reminded him of all kinds of iconic female singers while still being all her own.
After that, Shelton says that he wants her on his team even though it’s out of his area of expertise—because he knows she’s a champion. Next up is Clarkson, who loves her song choice and wants her as well. Finally, Levine says that the world and the show is missing a talent like hers.
Needless to say, there’s a lot of pressure on her to choose.
When it’s finally over, it’s all on Babini to choose her favorite judge.
Although it’s a lot of pressure, she takes a moment and makes her decision. After some deliberation, Babini goes with Adam Levine! While all the performers who go on the show are pretty incredible, getting all of the judges to turn around is no small feat.
Even though Babini is only 17 years old, the judges and the audience were instantly convinced by her powerful voice and her unique interpretation of the song. She definitely has a bright future ahead of her!
